Transferring Points to American Advantage miles

Hello all,

I decided to transfer points from Starwood to American Airlines so i could have enough miles to get a 3rd ticket to the Bahamas in the spring. I read that the transfer can only work if my AA miles account and my Starwood account had the same exact name. I read that it wouldn't even allow me to make the transaction if this was not the case. Well, my accounts DO have different names but i thought i'd try it anyway, and it seemed to work. It deducted the points from my Starwood account. I also read that it takes 2-4 weeks before i would see the miles added to my AA account. So, I have three questions.

1. Has anyone done a transfer as i described and had it work?

2. How long does it take for the miles to post?

3. If it does not work, will the points go back into my Starwood account?

Thanks in advance for all input.

Bill

My transfer had the same names for both accounts and took just a few days, I think. Don't remember this taking more than a week. I have no experience with transfers not going through; there's no reason to believe that you would not get points back if the transfer was deemed incorrect.

I converted my Westin points to AA points this year. All the Westin paperwork has my husbands name and the AA account is just my name. Same last name, but technically two different names. The points transferred flawlessly and took right about a week. For us, it worked really well as I could book a first class ticket I could never afford if I had to pay cash. ;)

Good luck, I am sure it will work fine.

Search around, here and on FlyerTalk.com and you should find more details, but from what I recall (from personal experience and reports from others), transfers requested by around noon on Friday should appear by Monday morning. So depending on the timing, it's usually 3-10 days.

i have transferred many times and it could take up to 3 weeks. going first class is the best. try to go first class for anything over 4 hours.
