We'll be traveling to Sevierville, TN on Saturday, June 21st, what traffic conditions should we expect late afternoon / early evening driving south on RT 66 from I-40?
Thanks,
Al

Sorry to say, it'll likely be jam-packed. :( Schools are out all over the southeast now. It's crazy all summer but Friday/Saturday evenings are often the worst... tired arrivals who've been driving all day, vacationers and locals heading toward Pigeon Forge for dinner shows.

When we stay in Sevierville, we avoid Rt. 66/441 altogether. Coming from the east (like you), we take an earlier exit, #432A, Rt. 411S/35 toward Sevierville. Turn LEFT onto 411 and drive ~9 miles toward Sevierville. Country roads become a quiet business district and we then turn LEFT onto either Veterans Blvd or Middle Creek Rd. This is only a couple lights before the intersection between 411/441/66. Anyway, a mile or two after you've turned left, you'll have driven past the medical offices and past a (BP?) gas station on the right - we go another block further and turn RIGHT to reach the Wyndham resort from the back, this road becoming Collier and ending at the Super WalMart on 441/Parkway.

If, instead of this right turn, you continued straight on VetBlvd/MdlCrk, you'd travel another two miles or so and see the back entrance to Dollywood on your LEFT. Continue straight and past the traffic lights, you could turn RIGHT, go over the bridge/river a block and come out to busy 441 in the heart of Pigeon Forge. This parallel route cuts out most of the 66/441/Parkway traffic between I-40 and points in Sevierville or Pigeon Forge.

BTW, for people coming from the west on I-40 through Knoxville, a small portion of I-40 in Knoxville was closed on May 1, 2008 for reconstruction and it will remain closed until June 30, 2009 - that's not a typo! Directions for detours are found on SmartFix40.com Whew! Hope this makes sense.

It will be very heavy, but probably not as bad as it can be.

I just spent a week at Oakmont in Pigeon Forge, arriving on Saturday, May 31. On Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer the southbound traffic on Tennessee Route 66 often comes to a standstill even before you actually enter the built-up part of Sevierville. Not this year; while traffic was heavy late Saturday afternoon, it never actually came to a stop unless you were within sight of a traffic light.

The following is a comment by another person familiar with the area who was there the same week I was:

"I have to say gas prices and the economy are affecting the area. We were able to get up and down the parkway in just minutes and not an hour. Traffic just wasn't there and the crowds weren't either."
