Dirtiest Hotel in U.S.

I was just emailed a list of the 10 dirtiest hotels in the U.S. as rated on tripadvisor. If you want to read about the horror story that is the Hotel Carter, take a look. Fair warning, do not look at travellers' pics unless you have a strong stomach. The complete list of the 10 dirtiest is here.

Those travelers pictures from the Carter Hotel on tripadvisor, are disgustingly troublesome.

I have no idea how anyone could be in the room long enough to open their camera case. The street has more appeal and is likely cleaner.

Our Free Las Vegas Hotel Was So Bad It Got Kicked Out Of The Days Inn Chain.

But the place was too cheap to buy a new sign, so it just had its ratty old sign crudely modified to say Good Day Inn.

Sheesh.

The place was so bad I was ready to go take my chances on Motel 6 or Super 8 instead. But The Chief Of Staff, good sport that she is, said it wouldn't be that bad.

It was the free accommodations we were awarded as part of some timeshare tour freebies a few years back -- airfare & hotel room for 2.

Click here for the whole story -- more than most folks might care to know.

At least the Good Day Inn doesn't show up on the Top 10 Dirty Hotels list -- though it wouldn't be a shock to see it on the Top 100 Dirty Hotels list (if there is such a thing),

Never again.

My one and only time staying at a Super 8 was the night the Patriots beat the Panthers in the Superbowl. I was driving back to Dallas from Houston (much cheaper flying in and out of Dallas than Houston) and pulled into a Super 8. Clerk asked if I wanted a Twin, Queen, or King room. I asked what the price on each was and was told they were each $40. Tough call, I mean really....am I going to spend $40 on for a Twin bed when I can spend the same $40 on a King bed?????

Room was clean though, and I didn't wake up with any rashes or other unsavory things.

I guess this made up for the time I had to unexpectedly stay at the Angle Fire resort in NM for a mere $250 after hitting an elk with a rental car in Cimarron, NM.

I once checked out of complimentary rooms because the place was disgusting and paid for the weekend instead but that hotel looks like a 5* compared to the Hotel Carter. What I don't understand is how a place as bad as this has not been closed by the city or state - whoever controls health inspections.

Ditto: In a hotel inspection not every hotel room are inspected. A random sample of hotel rooms are inspected.

Here is Tripadvisor's list of the Top Ten Dirtiest Hotels for 2009 in the U.S. Has anyone stayed in any of them?

Karen,

This thread (a VERY similar one) has already played here, beginning Feb 26th.

Can they be merged?

Ironically----one of the hotels (Travelodge) is on my drive to work each day.

Certainly, where is the other thread?

Yuck! Those pictures from the Carter Hotel! How could that place stay in business--doesn't the health dept. inspect hotels there?

Unfortunately, yes

Here is Tripadvisor's list of the Top Ten Dirtiest Hotels for 2009 in the U.S. Has anyone stayed in any of them?

Exactly a year ago, DH & I spent a nite in the Days Inn Tampa Airport/Stadium. We chose it from one of those Travellers Guides you can pick up at interstate reststops due to proximity to the airport. I wrote a review for Trip Advisor describing our horrific experience there, which could have been even worse based on other reviewers. I noticed that the only reviews visible now are those from 2009. Probably because there is a new owner of that "establishment"?

I did complain to Days Inn (BTW owned by Wyndham which owns RCI) and, whoop-de-do, got $20 refunded to our cc.

Based on that experience I will never stay in a Days Inn again, and will avoid other Wyndham hotel chains if possible.

It doesn't surprise me to see Days Inn occupying 3 of the top 10 slots. This chain has really fallen off the mark in recent years.

Years ago, I use to book hotel rooms in the chain that runs Days Inn's but, for the last 3 or 4 years I've avoided them like the plague. We had a few nasty hotel rooms and finally just said the heck with them. Once could be an issue with that particular hotel but, with three bad stays it's getting to be to much of a trend to take a chance on.

Now, I won't bid on anything less than 3 stars with Priceline or consider anything less than 3 with Hotwire. If I'm booking direct, I pretty much stick with Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt chains. Yes they cost more but the chances of having a bad stay are considerably less. The biggest issue being decent beds at the lower end hotels in those chains.

Karen, I hope you read my warning. I did say you needed a strong stomach! The really scary part of those pictures is that they are obviously from so many different rooms. I don't care how much a traveller is saving, you couldn't pay me to spend the night in the Carter.
