CharityChoice, JustGive and TisBest, which are all non-profits themselves, say they have repeat users who have been happy with the experience and terms. They point out that donors would pay the same 3 percent processing fee for any online donation.
Seattle-based TisBest was created to provide “non-material options available in a world of many, many material choices,” said Executive Director Jon Siegel.
The American Institute of Philanthropy, a charity watchdog, recommended people give to charities directly. “Why hand over a chunk of your contribution to a third party web site when you can give directly through a charity’s own site?” it asks.

True, but then it isn't possible to provide a gift to someone that is more or less guaranteed to be donated. My husband's employer did this type of arrangement years ago for Christmas -- each employee was given $25 to assign to a charity.
If I were donating my own money, I'd skip the middleman.

Thank you for the link! Super interesting In an earlier life, I belonged to a philanthropic sorority and chaired the committee to decide where we would donate our funds annually. Even on the charities of interest on tis best, I goggled to learn more about them before donating.

Salvation Army is a great place to donate money. They do so much for communities. When firefighters have a big fire, who shows up first to help, besides the fire and police and paramedics? Salvation Army. They help families immediately, find them a place to stay, and they give them food. The CEO doesn't make a salary. Another thing that they do is they support the efforts of the first responders by providing snacks and coffee at the scene. They are my favorite charity in the US.
I also donate to Feed My Starving Children. What a great organization. A small amount of money goes so far for starving people. You can provide a village food for a year for something like $1,500. The food is nutritious, but we wouldn't appreciate it as Americans, unless we were in that same boat.
