One of the benefits of owning timeshares is that they can be passed on to future generations. Often, the children have vacationed with their parents in timeshares from a young age and into adulthood. I have begun the process of educating my kids on the use of timeshare.

So far, I have mostly had my kids join me on vacations at the timeshares. But in the next couple of years, I will begin giving them vacations on their own so they can enjoy time away on their own. It is a process I want to start so that any transition will be minimized.

LOL, we vacationed with my parents in their timeshares before we bought our own, so our kids are quite familiar with timeshare accommodations vs. hotel rooms. And we bought enough DVC points for a 2BR as opposed to a studio because we wanted the space and amenities of the timeshare resorts we’d enjoyed with my parents, not a hotel room. However, our kids, being millennials, now prefer to book an Airbnb for 3-4 nights instead of a timeshare for a week. It’s probably good that our DVC ownership ends on January 31, 2042.

Nicely done. I know your intent is to highlight the positives about timeshares, which is great, and there are many advantages. I like how you talked about educating your kids, taking them with you on timeshare stays, and even giving them free stays in the future. I still love staying in timeshares, even though I no longer own any.

However, on the subject of inheritance, it would always be good to remind viewers that their children don't *have* to inherit the timeshare if they don't want it (even to the point of disclaiming it if they must because it's in the estate). Before my FIL passed, DW and I were asked if we wanted their timeshare, and we politely declined. At the time, we already owned three timeshares, and didn't need another one. Our son, despite having stayed with us on many timeshare vacations back in the day, is very much part of the short-stay Airbnb/hotel cohort.

I think a lot of people think their kids will want the same things they want. Usually your kids will marry someone who comes from a different background and have different thoughts on travel. We seem to think that because we like something that our kids will too. That may be true in some cases, but not all. I recall watching that John Oliver video where he shows the timeshare owners gleefully talking about the legacy they will leave and how their kids will be able to enjoy the timeshares after they pass on. It is all a feel good thing to get people to buy timeshares. In many cases, the kids may not want it and there might not be any need to teach them something. Have a plan to unload the weeks in the final years of your life or at a time when you are no longer able or willing to travel.

Our daughters say they want our timeshares (we only have two) but we'll see when the time comes if they really do or not.

I agree... My kids prefer airBnb as well... They do enjoy traveling with me as well... My biggest worry is that they will want them and not know how to use them... If they don't want them, that is their choice and I am fine with that... But wanting them and not knowing how to use them is the worst scenario.
