Well, it's almost the end of March, and I've still yet to get an exchange for my Pono Kai for Maui in mid-July. I'm about ready to give up. As a backup, I purchased a week at the Kaanapali Ali'i connected to the Marriot... a 1 br week with free parking is $1200 - great price, but...... I still am hoping for the exchange. Flights are paid for, car rental paid, excursions purchased.

I have the Kaanapali Beach Club, WKORV, Marriott, added Kahana Villa, Gardems at West Maui, and Sands of Kahana. I'll take any of the above, but I can't help to think time is about ready to run out. I would think most people have made their deposits now and paid their maintenance fees.

Do you think we still have a shot at an exchange? I've been on the books since August, was offered an exchange at the Gardens at West Maui back in December, but I declined.... maybe my mistake, but I wasn't ready to pull the trigger at that time on this particular timeshare. Now I'm ready for any that I've listed. Your predictions?

I don't want to depress you, but summer is high season in Hawaii (because the kids are out of school) with early to mid-July being the most popular of all because of the July 4th holiday. I have July 12-19th booked at my home resort (WKORV-N) and really regret booking that week because everything, from the car rental to the airfare, is sky high that week. Other owners have said that they book July weeks in Hawaii with the sole intention of renting them out because they command top dollar then.

For future reference, if you have to go in the summer, your chances of getting an exchange are far more likely if you try for early June or late August.

Take heart, though. $1200 for the Alii is a fantastic bargain.

rmb: I also own at Pono Kai and II doesn't give it much strength in trading. For the future, try RCI as Pono Kai is dual affiliated -- or try the Hawaiian exchanges like Trading Places Maui or the other one -- Hawaiian Timeshare Exchange (HTSE?).

Kaanapali Alii is lovely -- it sits close to our Whaler right smack on the beach and you can walk to so many places to eat, etc.

LisaRex: Occasionally we don't use our Whaler July 4 week -- is there a particular rental company people use and like? Generally we do private trades, but some year we may have to resort to renting it out if we are heading somewhere else.

Not LisaRex, but I have successfully used Redweek.com in the past. It cost about $20 to place a listing for six months. Good Luck

There are Classified Ads here. :) Also, as thinze3 reported, Redweek is good, though it limits your audience to mainly other timeshare owners, plus you have to pay to see the ads, which is something I strongly object to.

Most of the folks at the Westin report the best and most consistent success at CraigsList. Although it's a national website, most of its audience is based on the West Coast, which is a great target audience because of the ease of getting to Hawaii. Ebay sometimes works but tends to draw "bargain hunters" instead of folks willing to pay a fair price.
