I have a Whirlpool, less than two years old. It began making a loud clanking sound. I finally called in a repairman. A gear is slipping, and the repair with service call is nearly $400. I paid about $500 in 2018.
If I buy a new one, the service call of $119 is applied to the new purchase. I have a month to decide with them. I am looking at all options. Just makes me mad. He wasn't sure an extended warranty would have covered this. And generally, extended warranties are a waste of money.

I agree that extended warranties typically are not worth it. And I’ve had pretty good luck with whirlpool appliances over the years… However we have a Platinum whirlpool washer purchased in 2014, and we had to get new inlet valves replaced last year. I guess they’re just not making them like they used to...it’s sad.

Have you contacted Whirlpool? It may take a bit of time and letter (email) writing on your part, but reaching out to them can't hurt. Document the problem and perhaps something good can come from your reporting the problem.

Just buy a new one. Don't overthink this. Money is the only thing that you should be concerned with in this case. Maybe buy a different brand this time.

I second calling the manufacturer. You have nothing to lose. Once I did that, I would also just buy a new one (no use throwing good money after bad) but maybe consider Costco as they extend the manufacturers warranty for you. I think that it is 4 years on appliances.

did you pay by CC with free 1 year extended warranty? Amex has them, plus many chase/citi cards. If you're under 2 years, then the CC warranty should cover if washer had typical 1 year warranty.

I agree, a washing machine should last more than two years but if you can't claim it under warranty get a new one - maybe not whirlpool

I echo calling the manufacturer.
I broke a small part on a coffee maker. They sent a new part for free.

If the maker won't help and you don't have a CC's extended warranty I say,
just buy a new one.

I don’t want to jinx myself but my washing machines have lasted like 12-15 years. I have had Kenmore and GE. I now have GE again. Hoping for the same longevity but I know things aren’t made like they used to be.

I would put a complaint in with the manufacturer to get them to cover the repair. No way would I want to have to buy a brand new machine only 2 years in.

Call them. Email them. Go on their Facebook page and send them a message. Be persistent.

If you end up deciding to buy a new one, seriously look into Speed Queen. Made in America (the only brand made here now), and they are built like the old Maytags that would last 20+ years. My sister and her husband have a small appliance store and perform maintenance for their customers, and they rave over them -- they just don't break down. We got a new set last year, and absolutely love them. They are not the fanciest machines, don't have all the bells and whistles, but they just work.

I have no idea if the OP would be able to obtain a new machine right now due to Covid-19.

I went to look at new refrigerators the other day and there is currently a nationwide shortage of those right now.....

The reason they sometimes don't get the best rating for performance is because they usually test based on the water-saving mode, which is not Speed Queen's strong point. They were built as a more traditional washer, and when used in normal mode, we have found it performs very well. If you are set on only using low-water modes, it probably isn't the best choice.

Speed Queen is not the only washer brand made in the USA. Many Maytag, Whirlpool and GE washers are made in the USA.

Our Whirlpool washer/dryer set (gold series) is 17 yrs. old (2003).
No problems to date... I guess we were lucky,

Assembled, yes, but so many of the components come from overseas. When China was basically shut down, it disrupted the supply chains and is causing the shortages that anyone who works in the appliance business is seeing now.

Most Maytag and Whirlpool have 90+% of their components made in the USA and all assembled in USA. GE has 70%-90% of their components made in the USA and all assembled in USA.

Yup, that would tick me off too.

Wow...a gear failing after less than 2 years. I would echo the suggestion to call the manufacturer because that seems like a fault in the machine. My neighbors are big on Speed Queen too for its reliability.

We bought a new set about 3 years ago. Absolutely love them, no problems, and the washer has the big tub - no agitator - they're Samsung.

I bought an open box set at lowes...whirlpool. Lowes said the warranty was valid. A year ago the dryer thermostat failed. When I was on the whirlpool site and registered then, I was offered an extended warranty on the washer ( I was just a few days past the original warranty) since the dryer had problems just past warranty, I took the warranty on washer....fast forward about 10 months the washer won't complete cycle...I think it is out of balance. I figure I'll call whirlpool and have it serviced. Whirlpool then tells me that based on the serial number it must of been a floor model and the warrAnty was not valid...they wanted the receipt....which I don't have. So why sell me an extended warranty if the original was not valid...smh. I won't buy whirlpool again.

Another vote for Speed Queen. We gave up on Whirlpool when our washer needed a second, very expensive repair within about 6 years of purchase.

We've had the Speed Queen top load washer for several years now. No need for any service calls so far. Wash cycle is 20-25 minutes. What I like the most about it is that our model is mechanical, with NO COMPUTER CHIPS. Moisture and electronics boards are not a good combination IMO (replacing the electronics board was one of the problems with our Whirlpool machine). Also, we were told that many of the parts in the Speed Queen are metal rather than plastic. I love hearing the little mechanical clicking sounds it makes as it proceeds through the wash cycle. I'm not sure about the current models, though, because it's possible that the government may have forced some modifications on the manufacturer to, ahem, improve efficiency.

The Speed Queen did cost a little more, but I think we've already made that back. If we had purchased something else, we'd probably have needed service by now.

We just got ours last fall, and ours is all mechanical as well. They do have a low water cycle, but like I mentioned earlier, the machine is not optimized for that, so we never use it. We replace our top-of-the-line top load "high-efficient" Maytag that we only had for ~5 years with the Speed Queen, as we had a few issues with it and frankly, we were often disappointed in how poorly it cleaned the clothes. I put "high-efficient" in quotes because yes, it used less water, but with cycle times double of the Speed Queen, I'm sure each load used much more electricity.

As you mentioned, the ~25 minute wash cycle is great -- and it cleans the clothes much better than the 1hr, 15 min "heavy duty" cycle of the Maytag that we replaced! Plus, we found it is handles the clothes more gently; we had issues with the Maytag damaging some clothes. And unlike the Maytag, we never have load balancing issues anymore, even washing blankets. I can actually wash and dry 3 loads in 2 hours -- what a time saver and great for working people so you can get a bunch of laundry done in the evening after dinner.
