I read a book called "Death of the Thresher" when I was in high school, all about the loss of this sub. It convinced me that if I went into the Navy, I'd not want to be a submariner. I later did enlist, and spent 20 years in a decorated career - as a sailor on surface ships. I spent eleven of my twenty years stationed aboard ships, and was grateful every time I was ablet to step outside and see the sky. I give total kudos to sub sailors - they're a breed apart.

I was 8 years old and remember the Thresher story well - from the news reports of 1963
It came to my mind this week.

The Thresher was not the only loss. There was the Scorpion, years later.
The official ruling was that the USS Scorpion was lost to an ordinance problem. The Naval Ordinance Lab hotly disputed that finding, but I believe it still stood.

It was not a design flaw of the boat.

Merely pointing out another nuclear sub loss.
The original point was how the loss of the USS Thresher led to SUBSAFE which led the Navy to design better submarines.

I'm sure that the loss of the USS Scorpion led to a redesign of ordinances in the same manner.

Cause unknown. For a more detailed discussion of the Scorpion loss read the book SUBMARINE by Drew Middleton (1976). It has quotes from the Court of Inquiry on the loss.
