Thoughts On Using HGVC Points For Cruises

H

HGVCLOVER1

I was just wondering what HGCV members feelings are about using HGVC points for cruises? Also, is there a good company to use when booking cruises or an effective way to maximize points for cruises? Thanks for any suggestions.

You have to use HGVC's affiliated cruise booker... Cruises Only, accessed thru the member's website under My Club - ClubPartner Perks. Here's how it works:

"Enter the amount of ClubPoints you would like to apply to your cruise and click 'Submit.' Then choose your preferred itinerary and select 'Search' to view the results of your search. If the cost of the cruise you have selected exceeds the amount of ClubPoints you have entered, you will also be shown the additional cost in dollars needed to purchase your preferred cruise."

A few folks here find it to be a pleasant way to enjoy left-over points. IMHO, one should use points to book a cruise only if you have no other use for them, 'cuz the points per $1.00 reduction in price is, IMHO, not a good value compared to other uses, including HHonors. But then, YMMV.

We have just completed our third cruise using HGVC points since 2001. We have done numerous HHonors redemptions but have not ye had to convert HGVC points to HHonors points. The points accumulate quite rapidly with the Hilton AmEx and regular hotel travel. We enjoy the flexibility that HGVC provides. However, from an economic standpoint, the best use of HGVC points is time sharing in my opinion.

I checked into it a year ago!

It is not a good value, if you have more points than you can use, it may be an option.
My points are too precious to waste, I can find better deals for cash!

No doubt about it. You can easily find better deals with cash when it comes to cruising. However, we felt like taking a cruise and the points were available to diffray the cost. We will be staying at Residences at the Crane on October 30, 2010 for 4800 HGVC points. It just depends upon what we decide we want to do.

Indeed. Far better to use them for a purpose that suits your needs and objectives, than losing them.

I agree, this is really the key point. I looked into it briefly also last year and with the state of the cruise industry at the time, the deals were just too good to pass up and waste points on.

Even when the economy recovers and prices go back up, I still think there is always a better deal to be had paying with cash. And I can always find a better use for my points!!

I didn't end up booking anything at the time, but I still plan on eventually taking a cruise. I just won't be using any points.

Typically, I wouldn't be caught dead doing a HHonors conversion, but doing so, enabled us to take a trip on our to-do list that we would not have otherwise. As "piano" said, you may as well use 'em for something that you want to do, even if there are "better" uses.
