Hi - I am wondering if anyone has any recent experience at the Mazatlan El Cid properties?

Are they safe & good for families?

The most recent Tug review I can find is from 2014.

I was at el moro tower twice 8 years ago. Decent resort. I liked being able to do the all inclusive for 24 hrs at a time. I liked that right outside the resort was a city. More like a Florida beach town then a Mexican all inclusive.

Not sure how safe it is now.

The one in cozumel is nice as well but a lot smaller. By the cruise ship dock but not much around it but still walkable.

We own at the El Cid Marina in Mazatlán but we have not been there in several years. We liked it very much but my mother can no longer travel and our son is married now. We are probably going to have to figure out how to get rid of it....if that is possible....

If yours is like mine (El Cid) it is a right-to-use (RTU) that expires at some point. Either 2021 or 2024 something like that. You can call title to check. That is why I bought it in the first place, that if I hated it, it would eventually go away! I hope so because my El Cid points are by far my highest MF points.

Most of my Wyndham points are El CID. I have stayed at 4 El CID properties over the years. Have not been back to Mazatlan since 2000 when El CID went into the then Fairfield/Wyndham organization. The Marina property was gorgeous and so was the El Moro Tower. My reason for staying away from Mazatlan has more to do with preferring Cabo and Playa Del Carmen than the drug problems. The El CID on Cozumel is super cute. It is a distance from downtown, but there are buses and cabs. We hv walked it several times also. There is also an EL CID in Puerto Morales south of Cancun. This is an all-inclusive resort which I don't like. I was allowed to stay there twice using my points and no all inclusive. Mainly because when I upgraded to points with El CID they guaranteed they were building more resorts and that was the location. I wrote enough emails and made enough phone calls the two systems got together and let me have the 2 winter weeks I needed.
Since that time I have bought 10 contracts at a small resort in Playa Del Carmen that is our favorite place on planet so I have no need to stay in Puerto Morales any longer.
My contracts are RTU and start expiring 2019. The only reason I acquired more contracts was for Wyndham access and because they did expire. Most contracts that expire after 2024 are ECVC El CID VacTion Club which is a different animal. I believe those contracts are for 100 yrs.

We were in Mazatlan last year and stayed in at El Moro Beach Hotel and at the Marina. At El Moro we stayed on the top floor of the tower in a 2 bedroom. We loved it. The only problem we had with El Moro was the food. We really didn't enjoy the food there. We did the all inclusive for 3 days which I think we got for around $40/day after doing the presentation. There are decent restaurants within walking distance and the open air taxis (Pulmonias) are everywhere and cheap. There was a "taco stand" in the empty lot across the street that popped up every morning that served local men on the way to their jobs. That was an interesting meal. The Pool at El Moro has interesting "rock" formations that make for a lot of fun jumping.

At the bar at El Moro they had a band for friday/saturday and it's typical to find locals there celebrating birthdays, bachelorette etc. We enjoyed it but it is like a typical "bar" and some of the individuals appeared to be how would I say, "sketchy". On two nights we met other tourists in the bar and took a Pulmonia to Joe's Oyster Bar which is ummm...quite the party place. One night it was with a Canadian from Saskatchewan and the other night it was with a Mexican couple. We blasted down Avenida Camaron with AC/DC pumping in the open air pulmonia. Good times. Joe's probably isn't the safest place. I've never witnessed anything like that before. A literal crush of people If you want to stay safe at night it might be best to stay away from the nightclubs.

The Marina was beautiful. The room was bright, clean and a real Mexican feel. We had a good meal at the restaurant there and the room service was very reasonably priced. We found the cost of restaurant meals in Mazatlan cheaper than Puerto Vallarta. The downside of the Marina is that there isn't much within walking distance. Pool and grounds are beautiful of course. And we enjoyed the view of the marina.

I'd rate the Marina safer then El Moro, but El Moro is definitely livelier with more to do close by.

We were in Cozumel, maybe 3 years ago. It has more the island feel. The all inclusive was great and we did it for 3 or 4 days and went exploring on our own for the other days. There is no bus service there and it will cost about 15 bucks one way to get to a grocery store. They were building a "strip mall" across the street to service the cruise ships but it will of course be quite touristy and pricey. We had some wonderful meals in the restaurants downtown. You will probably want to rent a car to see the island which you can drive around in several hours. We felt safe wandering around downtown at night but that was 3 years ago. The narcos seem to be moving into the area if you have been following the news. Snorkeling is fantastic of course. I'd recommend a car.
