This airline will charge you to recline your seat on some planes

Westjet...in Canada we have few options. completion for airlines. Air Canada is the other. The one common thread is that they are poor air service providers. We will typically drive to DTW for better pricing. WJ also charges for carry ones, seat selection, checked luggage and rumor is soon for fresh air LOL.

Fake headline. They do not charge you if you recline your seat. They charge you more for a seat that reclines. You cannot pay a charge to allow your seat to recline in regular economy.

Thanks. I figured it was another fake (CLICK BAIT) headline, and the rest. I was laughing at a seat that has a long stick running up the back, and one of those old coin boxes, like in an old arcade rocking horse or something. Put your quarter in the box (Oh,OK, swipe, but that isn't as fun of an image), the stick retracts and the seat can then recline.

I'd rather no seats reclined (except 1st class).
I have reclined on occasion, but I can get by without.
If the seat in front of me reclines, it invades my space
... of which there's precious little as it is.

Sensationalized but not fake. Have a look at the new standard seats coming...notice that they will be eliminating the padding also.

I am also someone who can live without the seats reclining. On an overnight/redeye flight where 99% of the cabin reclines its okay, but on the 1 1/2 hr jump when the first thing the guy in front of you does is just about ram the seat into your lap, thats annoying.
Choice in Canada is non-existent, its a duopoly (AC/WJ). Even worse now that it seems that AC has given up on that battle in the west, no direct flights out of YYC to really any USA/Mexico/Central America destination on their own iron, for that you have to connect through YVR or YYZ.
Porter I think is making a little bit of headway here and there, say what you want about them but Id rather sit side by side with my wife in a E175 then knee to back in a Max 8 on AC/WJ.
I do honestly think that WJ is like Comfort as Disney is to ticket prices, lets find the absolute limit to where we have the hate/profit just perfectly aligned.

I know it's a divisive issue, but I'm in the camp of appreciating a reclining seat as I have tight hips/hamstrings and end p with a sore back if I leave my seat fully upright. Likewise I don't mind if the person in front of me reclines. As much as it sucks getting nickled and dimed, I suppose I'll have to spring for a seat upgrade.

I collect points and fly with both Westjet and Air Canada, and over the past few years it seems like Westjet is clawing back many of the things that make them likeable.

Yeah. Westjet is slowly pulling back on all the things I liked about them except one - direct flights from my home airport. They're doubling and tripling down on that. And, imo, none of the other airlines are so much better that an extra connection is worth it. I'd much rather spend that time at a resort...

Westjet was a good company before it was taken over by Onex, a private equity firm. The only thing that matters now is profit, how do we make customers pay more? But like Bizaro86 says they are pretty much the only game in town. Air Canada and Westjet have decided to stay in their zones mainly, meaning Air Canada flies the east and Westjet takes the west. When they started charging for carry on was when I started hating pretty much all airlines. In the past month I have flown 10 flights 4 with Westjet, 2 Air Canada, 2 Scoop Air (Singapore to Bali) and 2 Air Asia (internal Indonesia flight) none of them really provided much service. Scoop doesn't even let you eat your own food on their planes and announced it more than once, even though they were the reason everyone was hungry since the flight was 3.5 hours late. Air Canada (Vancouver to Singapore) provided two light meals in the 16 your flight and left the lights off the rest of the time to encourage you to sleep even though coming back left in the morning. My husband commented we would have received 3 meals if we were in prison. Westjet was to Boston and back with the crew doing both directions. Getting there was fine (no food of course) but coming back at 6:30 after one round of drinks lights went out and not even garbage was collected. SO far I have refused to pay for a seat and I got a new credit card that gives me free checked luggage when I fly. Also a reduced companion fare every year. I do hate though that it kind of rewards Westjet but my friend loves her rewards card.

Make sure you check all the changes now with the WestJet Credit Cards.. To just name a few new restrictions you have to pay for the flight with your WestJet Card for the free luggage (so cant get a deal on Costco Gift Cards etc and use those anymore and get your luggage). The Luggage thing though is a bit of a scam because Econo Fares and higher all include 1 Checked bag free anyways (Only Ultra Basic I beleive does not include anything). Also now in order to get your companion fare you have to spend $5000.00 on your card to qualify for it.

The changes to the credit card combined with the changes to the rewards program this year are a huge nerf. Unless you are based out of YYC and don’t have any real options, I can’t see why anyone would choose WestJet on the basis of the rewards program. The companion voucher was worthwhile if you booked the Premium fares, but has really lost value for economy flights.

I don’t pay for the credit card since I get it free. If I did have to pay I’d be canceling.

This may be true for domestic flights within Canada, but we do have Porter offering some good routes are reasonable prices.

There are options if flying internationally (although I prefer flying AC to Asia), and from my non-hub city I find it easier to fly to the US via United which has significantly better connections through DEN, ORD and IAH and saves me having to connect through YVR, YYZ or YUL on AC.

The bottom line is that passengers are so focused on saving $5 in airfare the airlines are now daring them to fly economy over paying for higher fare classes.

Econo includes a carry on bag but no checked bag. A checked bag is free if you have the credit card (and now pay for the ticket with the card), or have westjet status.

Sorry, I meant to quote the EconoFlex fare. Not that anything WestJet does is convoluted or anything :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for the information on the changes to the card Soccer Canada. I was notified but hadn't really let the changes sink in. Since I use my credit card for at least 2 maintenance fees and personal spending I should hit the $5000 annually. Since Westjet introduced ultra basic that is what I have chosen to fly since it is the cheapest. I "love" how they call you zone 9 for boarding and mention before you get on that you must put your personal item under your seat. Wouldn't want to let cheap customers be too comfortable even if there is room in the overhead bins. When I booked Westjet to Vancouver to catch our Singapore flight ultra basic was still cheaper than the next tier even with the $47 each way bag fee. Shortly after i got the new credit card and of course they wouldn't refund the previously booked bag fees. Lesson learned only pay for bags within the last week or so. And yes I fly out of YYC so not a lot of options. We love driving trips (did 2 to various US destinations in the past year) but now with our low dollar and the situation in the US we are trying to cut back on those trips which of course is tough with various timeshares.
