Since my sister and I have been grown with children we have vacationed with our parents at a beach house each summer. It has been customary that each family cooks a meal one night during the vacation. During the past few years we have had a "friendly" competition to have the "best" theme night. There are 8 adults and 13 children(2-16).

We have done the Mexican thing with pinatas, the Cajun/Mardi Gras thing and the Hawaiin thing....along with some other things that the dads have come up with.

I know I can rely on you guys to help me with a theme night for this years vacation that will WOW them all.

The winner, voted on by all attendees, has the prestigous opportunity to adorn their Christmas tree with 9 purple butterflies made from panty hose that came from who knows where and belonged to my great great great grandmother.

Please let me know your ideas.

Thanks in advance,
cindy

How about a Reality TV theme?

You could make some kind of 'reality chef' competition game to get the meal cooked, and then have a scavenger hunt/car rally for Amazing Race and/or do dare games for Fear Factor or Survivor.

Then everyone could sing in the Idol competition :whoopie:

Good luck! Sounds like fun!

How about a Roman night? The food could be primarily Italian, and those who wanted to get into the spirit could wear togas and lounge on pillows. The kids (or very fun adults) could participate in "chariot races", which could be anything from a sack race to racing on a "noodle" or inner tube the length of the pool. Laurel leaf crowns to the winners (and maybe a pouch of salt!). The kids might enjoy making Roman "jewelry" for the occasion - snake-themed arm bands, rings with their own personal seal on it, gold/glittery necklaces.

It sounds like you have a fun group. I like the idea of theme nights. Maybe I'll borrow it in the future for visits with extended family!

Iron Chef night

Pick a theme ingredient and have everyone cook/bring a part of the meal. You could make it very fun.

Make sure someone brings enough to fill in if the ingredient is not able to make a full meal.

How about a 50's night (or 60's depending how old you are...LOL)

Or a Taste of Nations night with many different dishes...everyone could dress froma diff. country.

Or a pligrim's night....

What we do when we travel with friends is we have an alphabet party....what I mean by this is for example:
Hosting family decides to have a "C" party....all the food must start with C (cake, cheese, corn, creamed potatoes, crackers, chips, etc.) You could even have a couple "C" games, cards, checkers, chess, (musical) chairs.
