Who invented the cash register?

James and John Ritty came up with the prototype of the cash register, patenting it on this date in 1879.

James Ritty was a saloonkeeper whose bartenders often pocketed the profits, instead of turning them over to their boss.

His brother, John, was a mechanic.

Together, they worked on a design for a machine that would record cash transactions at the saloon.

They called their device Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier.

It had no cash drawer; there were keys representing a specific amount of money.

The employee would push the appropriate key with every sale, tabulating transactions as they happened.

At the end of the day, Ritty could see if any money was missing.

Eventually, the Rittys decided to sell their interest in the cash register factory they had opened.

John H. Patterson bought up the rights and changed the name of the company to the National Cash Register Company.

HQ'd in Dayton OH, and had a beautiful park that employees could enjoy, called Old River, with swimming pools, canoeing, lots of picnic areas, etc. Several of my family members worked there.

Patterson was also instrumental in saving many people's lives following the great dayton flood of 1913. He made boats that were used to save people stranded on buildings. My grandma was one of those people. She was 12 years old at the time, and had to crawl across a wooden shutter positioned between two buildings windows, in order to get from a 3rd story building to a 4th story building downtown, the water level was so high. Mr. Patterson is a big reason why we have the Miami Watershed project, and a series of dams, in the dayton area. The great miami river, little miami river, stillwater river, all intersect in downtown dayton. Now, thanks to Mr. Patterson and many others, Dayton has never suffered another flood like 1913. Wright Patterson AFB was named after his son (atleast the Patterson part).

Worked there

I worked there for 6 years. Had to quit when I got pregnant; couldn't work and show that you were pregnant.

Well it is HQ'd in Dayton, but not for much longer. Several months ago NCR announced they were picking up shop and moving their headquarters to Atlanta. The rumor was early on that Atlanta had gotten some stimulus money to attract jobs to the area, basically by taking them from an already fiscally decimated city in Ohio. I don't think this was the type of thing the feds had in mind when they planned the stimulus. Don't know how true that rumor was though.

NCR "humor"

Yes, it's true they are moving their headquarters. DD works for them in NYC.

She says they are now calling the CEO "24"! Anyone know why? I'll post the link after the guesses.

Honesty, I did not even know they were still in biz. I was referring to the fact that the NCR world hq was in dayton back in the hayday. Wasn't NCR bought out many, many years ago by some other company? I didn't think "world HQ" even counted anymore when someone else owns you.
