The Difference Between A Calzone And Stromboli

Just get a pizza... they are essential-ly the same food.

Absolutely different.....

A calzone is folded circular dough stuffed primarily with ricotta cheese - some mozzarella. You can have it plain like that or some places offer meat or veggie (I like ham in a calzone). No sauce inside - it is on the side. If you go to Italy, you will find them covered in toppings and sauce. Usually baked around here - I think they are fried in Italy. Typically has 1/2 circle shape

A Stromboli is rolled dough that has layered cold cuts and cheese. Peperoni and Mozzarella is the most basic. I get one from Lidl that has peperoni and sausage and mozzarella cheese. It is baked, shaped like a log and has no sauce inside. Sauce served on side.

While I have occasionally seen sauce inside a calzone - I have never seen it inside a stromboli. Of course, once you get away from the Italian centers of the US, anything can be called anything.

They even have a cake down south that is called an 'Italian Cream Cake' - it is made with cream cheese frosting and pecans - two very UN-ITALIAN ingredients. If that was Italian it would have hazelnuts and a ricotta-based frosting (think cannoli) or possibly mascarpone based.

Best stromboli I ever had was in Hummelstown, PA at Your Place. Non-secret sauce is mustard. https://www.yourplace.biz/

In Bonita Springs, FL, ANY Pizzeria makes a damn good one. https://www.anypizzeria.com/

Always get sauce on the side.

Went to check out Your Place - because I love a good stromboli. I would stop there next time I am in teh area. Apparently all 3 locations in PA are 2.5 stars in yelp and the reviews trash the stromboli.

When is the last time you had it?

I noticed that too. It's been about 20 years since I've been. There is still a number of pro reviews for the boli, so I'd give it a try.

Didn't we just have a stromboli/calzone thread about a month ago?

I purchased a Stromboli today from an Italian restaurant for lunch and your description was correct. It was excellent.:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:
