The fault for our Cox bill lies, not only with Cox, but also with ourselves...
We pay out the wazoo becuz two channels I like (ESPN+HGTV) aren't on a cut-rate package. DW also wants the Encore movie channels. So it seems we're stuck with one of their "biggie" packages. We also have 4 STB's for a twop-person house... I'm not sure I understand that.

Why don't you move to something like Hulu -- you can watch those channels on there.

What about buying either a Roku or Apple TV device to replace most of your STBs? If you have access to buying a TiVo, that may also be an option.

I was so hesitant to cut the cord. When i finally did it was the best thing ever. The Apple TV and YouTube TV, and just internet saved me 80 bucks a month. I watch more channels than I ever did before. The cable companies caught on that customers don’t want surprise fees only because they realized people are annoyed at being ripped off and started leaving in droves. Without competition these cable companies would still be charging fake fees. They can end the fees now but they will be back. Cable companies will be back to their own antics. Only until the wireless companies come out with true 5G and a way to use it as home WiFi will the cable companies really bring their prices down. If I could dump spectrum fully I would.

I don't see Verizon's plans to offer any savings? I poked about the site a bit and learned that neither of our homes are w/in their service areas. Of course, why I'd pay any company for "site specific" TV service these days is crazy.

We currently have AT&T's "Now" (streaming) service grandfathered back to day 1. Given AT&T's recent rate hikes (now $60/m for the grandfathered plan) ... I'm thinking to drop them. The only channels we watch from the package are ESPN, Fox News and (rarely) RFD TV. The first two are my husband's "go to" channels and while I thought I'd enjoy RFD, the programming I want is too infrequent to be worth the bother. So really, we are paying $60/m for two channels ... and I'm on the hunt to reduce this expense!

I think you can subscribe to ESPN Plus. Not sure if that's the entire channel or just add on stuff to regular ESPN. Also I think Fox News has a subscription model as well. Dump the cable and just subscribe to those two.

We've looked at ESPN+ many times and cannot, from the materials presented, determine if it includes the actual ESPN channel. Do you or others have specific confirmation? Thx!

Hi Rhonda,

What's not included with
ESPN+? ESPN+ is technically
separate from ESPN, ESPN2,
and ESPNews, so a
subscription will not grant you
access to live games being broadcast on
those networks, including any live games
during Monday Night Football and Sunday
Night Baseball; MLB games are still available
to be streamed. Nov 2, 2019

I researched it further and it is additional content to regular ESPN so no, it's not really worth it. Same thing with Fox Nation. It's additional content to Fox News.

Thanks to you both! That seems to agree with what we'd figured ... no live NFL football coverage (specifically Monday night) if we went ESPN+.

What is their price for a package that includes ESPN and Fox News?

UPDATE: Found it. Looks like $50/m ... so not much savings.

We use a Roku box and SlingTV for most of our TV watching - mostly HGTV and DYI.

We did have to subscribe to ESPN+ this year because 10 of the KU games are only there. :( Lots of KU fans are not happy with this. Of course they seem to have 2 games a month on it for 5 months. :(. The ESPN+ has had some issues with broadcasting, but since it is our only option to see the games, we have paid the fees. We will drop that once the 2nd game in March is done.

We have not missed cable in the past 5 years and even with cable, we would have had to subscribe to ESPN+ now that the Big12 has signed up with them and put all the teams that do not normally play on the regular channels are scheduled to play Jayhawks there. KU basketball and the Tournament are the only sports that we watch.

We just signed up for internet and streaming tV service for our new home to be installed in February when we get up there.

My husband has to have the networks and FOX news and channels like ME TV. Otherwise, I could care less and can live with my BlazeTV and Amazon Prime subscription off ROKU.

Here in NY we have Spectrum- which is actually internet and internet TV (different than streaming- it has a box), no cable. Has all the basic tv channels like MeTV, the networks, HGTV, etc. It costs us $117 per month.

In NH, it would be streaming TV with wifi and internet and it will be something like $135 per month (with tax and bs fees). Free installation.

Was a real racket going on when I initially called- they only offered us 2 options- one with just networks and Epic and HBO. The other had landline phone with enhanced 911 included-plus Showtime and Epic + 200 channels at $155 per month. (with tax and bs fees). But we did not want the landline!. It was a bundle. Free installation.

I looked over their website some more and saw other bundles and called back and got someone who took out the landline and upped our MBPs to 250 instead of 100 and gave us all the same 200 channels + Epic and Showtime -as the other package had - said it should be $135- $145. Wait- couldn't tell me exactly? SMH....

Pretty much they are the only game in town. If it weren't for my husband's preferences, I would just have internet service and call it a day with my Roku. I don't watch a lot of tv anyway. Can live without it.

Even at our former home we had internet at $60 per month and basic Directv at $57 per month. So was much less expensive there as well.

How do you get You Tube TV? On Roku? Is it available everywhere?

The one major problem we had while being cordcutters was deciding what service had all the channels we wanted. That ended up being PS Vue which is now gone! Plus, just About all of these services have raised their prices over the last year. You really need a solid internet connection. Not necessarily a super fast one but one that doesn’t go in and out on a whim.

Our major complaint was when something went wrong nobody wanted to take responsibility. If we had buffering problems our internet provider would say it was Roku’s problem and Roku would say it was PS Vues problem and around and around!

For the $30 a month we were saving it was a no brainer to go back to DISH on a two year price lock. At least when something goes wrong we now have one point of contact. Yes, we get the occasional rain fade but in the grand scheme of things that is minor.

Forthose considering cutting the cord here is a good comparison of the services out there. Everyone of them has different channel lineups so do your research. The only redeeming value they ended up having for us was the no long term contracts. https://www.cnet.com/news/best-live-tv-streaming-services-for-cord-cutters-for-2020/

Your post is aligned with my experience. I cut the cord and did that for about 6 months -- using primarily Netflix and Hulu Live. I won't bore everyone with the details but I found the experience to have a lot of downsides. I wound up going back to cable but figured out some tricks to make it much cheaper than my first go-around. I think I am now paying $10 more a month than when I had "cut the cord". Well worth it.

Thank you. I have not cut cord, cable was working fine for me, and I don't mind hearing "cutting didn't work for me" as I don't think it would work for me, either. My promo stint with DirecTv is coming to an end and I won't ever try a dish again. I can only hope that Super Bowl night isn't rainy, snowy or windy. sheesh...

Loving NFL ticket, and 212 NFL Network. But, not worth it for me. If my team is blacked out, sports pub is less than 5 minutes away. I don't need All the games unless I end up in a football pool as I am pretty good at picking against spread but no more pools paying it for me! I don't like that "OnDemand" requires internet as I lose connection here a lot.

Not an Amazon subscriber. Not a big movie person, either. Basic cable should be fine for me. I will miss DVR, tho, and I won't be paying 15/month for it (last known Comcast charge for it).
