I think the GI Bill is one of the best programs developed by our Federal Government.

The GI Bill was a great program until the benefits were greatly expanded. It should have been kept simple as it was after WW II and the Korean War. Back then it was a monthly stipend with the responsibility of how to best use the money left in the hands of the Veteran. When I used it after the Korean War I had to find the least expensive best alternative I could. Now the Government pays the entire tuition at most schools, adds money for books, and provides a housing allowance. The discipline is gone and the cost to the Government skyrockets!!

it wasnt until 1944 that the GI bill was enacted, The Bonus Army was a 1932 event...So there might be a connection, but it seems a stretch to me

Like so many things we can argue about how the program is implemented, but we cant argue about the need, or the success

The vets were promised the money in 1917/18 - they weren't going to get the money until 1944/45 - the great depression intervened and they wanted the money sooner. The House of Representatives and the Senate have never been known for their speed to pass or enact legislation. Doesn't seem like a stretch to me.
