For some reason the last few weeks the birds in our neighborhood have been singing, chirping and "talking" almost all night long.

It used to be they started their chatter at about 5 or 6 AM, but the other night they woke me up at about 1AM and just this past evening they were going at it at 3AM. And they don't just chirp for a bit...it's all night.

Just a bit of background. We live in an urban/suburban area, in metro Los Angeles. When we first moved here (about 10 years ago) there were lots of birds, especially doves that would "cooo" in the morning. Then it seemed the birds sort of disappeared for awhile and then this last season they have come back....almost with a vengence.

Don't get me wrong. I like them. Right now in the early morning I have always enjoyed listening to them sing. I missed them when they sort of disappeared.:)

But I don't like them starting to sing at midnight and then continue all night long.....What's with this new behvior pattern????

I have no idea of the type of birds they are.

I am just curious if any bird lovers or naturalist types out there know anything about birds and bird behavior? Why are they all of a sudden singing all night? Hopefully someone will tell me it's seasonal and will die out pretty soon.

Listening to them in the morning is pleasant, having them wake me up or keeping me awake all night is no fun! :(

Yesterday, my DD in CT complained of the same thing.........

Birds singing at night? That's so strange. It has to be a species that is new to the area. I'm trying to think of one that is awake at night.......!
Maybe put a couple of those fake owls by your bedroom to try to scare the feathers off them?

I've been noticing even here in Michigan that they birds are VERY MUCH "a twitter" in the morning. Starting at first light around 5 a.m. It seems every morning by about 5:30 a.m. I'm up and closing the bedroom window then burying my head under the pillow to block them out so I can fall back asleep. Is this a replay of "The Birds"?!

What the heck's a DD in CT? ;)

A dear daughter in Connecticut.

Could be mockingbirds. One kept me up when I was visiting Phoenix. Since they can mimic anything, they can sound like different types of birds--and even mechanical sounds. I don't know much about them. You could google their habitat and mating season. You could also try your local/state extension agent.

Definately they be mockingbirds (in my pirate voice).

Pretty common in N. Calif neighborhoods. They seem to sing all day AND night.

Worse is that the mimic seems to stake out a favorite perch and doesn't leave.
Had one perch on the T.V. antenna just yards from our upstair bedroom window.

Couldn't sleep for a week.

I don't know about mocking birds, sound more like taking the ...... birds. Blame it on Global Warming, it gets the blame for everything else :whoopie:

We're having this problem too - and I also concluded it's probably mockingbirds but whatever it is I haven't had a good night's sleep in a week!

But I still love birds...so I like the idea of blaming global warming!:D

Edited to add: just found this on a website about mockingbirds: "Male birds can often be heard bellowing their borrowed tunes late at night and into the wee hours of the morning, especially during a full moon." Was there a full moon recently?

It probably is a Mockingbird or two. I know we have them in and around our yard.

Did some research as suggested. It seems that it is probably an "unattached" male, looking for a mate, who is doing the singing all night. And it does appear that we are having a full moon phase....

So all I need to do is wait for the moon to change and find a female Mockingbird for my noisy "neighbor". :D

But until then, I think I will sleep in another room and get a pair of ear plugs!;)

I don't mind their singing but taking my food is another issue. We just returned from St. Lucia and they even attached my banana on the kitchen counter. Open air is nice, but----. The nice thing is that birds and small lizzards are the only creatures we had in the unit. What a wonderful vacation!!:)

Well the frogs in my backyard are keeping me awake. I don't know what's louder, the frogs or my hubby's snoring! Well we solved this problem the other nite. We got a huge garbage can and used the garden hose to make them jump into the can and closed the lid. We drove up the road to the pond and released them into their new home and now all is quiet in my backyard!

Okay, so last night I wake up at 4:30 and guess what? It's dark out and the birds are singing to beat the band. I'm thinking, it's everywhere!! Even in western PA. At dawn - nothing. Quiet as could be. What's with that? Wacky world?!

The only time I've noticed birds making noise after sunset is in an urban setting where lighting - such as a street light stays on, and the birds are in a tree where the light is shining.

I'm also in PA and same thing with me! It was 5:30 though. I had my window open and they sure were merry.

The tree is in the back, by my bedroom window...of course!

There is a street light in the front which has been there for years, and this is the first year that it has been all night.

Last night, didn't notice it...so hopefully my little friend has found a mate to distract him!!!:D

In therory young birds may practice at night what they've heard during day.

From http://www.answerbag.com/

... Mockingbirds will sing all night long at times, and sometimes there are some nights that I feel it is 'supposed to sleep' ! The goatsuckers, whipperwills, are night birds. Many regular old daytime birds will be up and about too, especially on bright moonlit nights.

We kept the window open last night, but I used foam earplugs and it was much much better.

I could hear the bird(s) but it was muffled because of the earplugs, so I didn't stay awake all night. I bought them at the local drugstore for about $4 for a pack of 10 pair. I also used a "white noise" machine I have had for awhile. Between the two things, it was as noted better.

You are right it starts about midnight and sounds like lots of birds, but may be only one Mockingbird as others have pointed out.

Hopefully once the full moon phase finishes, my little friend will get the hint and go to sleep!

We have noticed the birds too but I like it. We also have a Mocking bird sometimes that will not stop and I listen to him while it annoys my SO and he would like to chase it away.

Most of the time, I am still up and I have gone outside to see what's going on. Where are all these birds and what are they? We have noisy tiny little birds in a large group in one big bush and they make so much noise together that people can hear it on the phone so I have to close the door. Then they all disappear again and you may not see them back for weeks or months but they are in someone else's backyard because I hear them when I walk by. I love the sound of birds as that is much better than listening to traffic. :)

For three years in a row, I was awaken by a loud "back-up" bell. The kind on heavy equipment or trucks. I live in a usually quiet neighborhood. I would look out the window - no equipment. Yep, it turned out to be a mockingbird EVERY morning starting about 4:30. It would start in the spring and not stop until end of summer. Guests came downstairs asking where the construction site was located! This last spring he did not return, I don't miss him at all:cheer:

Sounds like those birds must be on eastern time instead of pacific time. They need to reset their clocks. Could it be the full moon?

Thank goodness. I thought it was me. Same thing here in the country of Northeast PA. It must be a springtime thing and it is full moon.
