The Best VPN's According to the Reddit Community

"Would you be cool if someone leaked your entire Google history to the government? How about if your internet provider made it so that one episode of The Bake Off took an hour to load?

If you've had a crisis about anything related to the above, you've probably given some thought to getting a VPN.

We know you've seen loads of VPN reviews from experts across the board, including from our tech team at Mashable. But if you wanted a raw opinion — or thousands of them — from people with absolutely no filter, there's only one place to go: Reddit.

Because who better to ask about the best private networks than the people who experiment with them all day, every day?....."

I’m currently using Windscribe. It helped me watch the Dodgers in Hawaii since the islands are considered Dodgers “home” territory.

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around VPN’s for a long time and still don’t quite understand their allure! I’m sure there is one since many many people use them. I just haven’t figured out how it might benefit us!

Consider this comment from above, “How about if your internet provider made it so that one episode of The Bake Off took an hour to load?” How is a VPN going to make this better? From what I’ve read you tend to lose some internet speed when using a VPN, not gain it!

Your comment rings true. Most people who use them either don't need them, or think they are getting benefits that they are not by using it. ie., "security"

The most important reason for the "average" user is to anonomyze their ip address to the sites they ultimately connect to on the other side of the vpn. Your isp (including your cell provider) keeps a database of your ip address at any given time(as do most websites), and could (theoretically) give this info to law enforcement or some one in a civil suit with a warrant or subpoena. This is why those who use torrent sites or visit "other" sites that they want to keep quiet use VPNs.

If you use a lot of public WiFi, a VPN is a good idea. You can also use it to spoof your location if your local team is blacked out on MLB.

It is also useful if you use a streaming service and travel outside the country. You may find that much of the content that you stream is restricted to US endpoints only, and a VPN can make it look like you are connecting from the States.

My employer provides one; there are some resources that either must be accessed from within our wired network, or via our VPN. So, I use it even on the wireless infrastructure on campus. Additionally, I had a commercial one when I traveled to China---as it happens, VPN Express---so that I could still have access to my email/collaboration tools, which for my employer are contracted with Google.
