I am a pretty new Marriott owner and I am trading with II.

I deposited my summer week at MMC and now I'm looking for a trade. Can you put a pending request out early for a Marriott and then when you come into the 13 months window will your request to considered automatically or do I have to phone the Marriott desk at II?

I don't seem to see alot of Marriotts 13 months out from today's date when I login to II, is that because smart Marriott II owners have already snapped these up with a pending request?

By "pending request" I assume you mean an ongoing search for II to find for you the exchange that you have requested.

Such an ongoing request will usually bring better results than doing a search yourself. That's because what you can see online are the leftovers after II has filled outstanding requests such as yours. Once you put such a request in, you don't have to call II. However, if you see a week available online that meets your needs, don't wait for II, confirm it for your exchange.

Those weeks that you see online are there because of one of the following: (1) There are no exchange requests at II for that week, (2) the week is still within the 24-day Marriott internal exchange priority period and there are no other Marriott owners requesting that week or (3) there may be other exchange requests for that week but II deems those requests to be not comparable to the week you can see.

The earlier you place your request, the earlier you will be in line for the exchange you are requesting. I often make a request two years or so in advance.

The date limit of your ongoing request is limited by the expiration date of your deposited week. For instance, I have one deposit that expires May 31, 2010. I can use it to request a Marriott week in April or May 2010 even though those week will not be available until the Spring of 2009. My request will be considered as soon as weeks are deposited and, according to II lore, my week will have more trading power than an equivalent week that was deposited later in time.

So, I think you have it basically right.

Just curious, for searching within the flexchange period, I know most weeks show up in the early morning, however sometimes when I check for availability late at night I would see some "good" weeks (e.g. Kauai Christmas week) during the flexchange period, and usually the closer it gets the more of these last minute weeks pop out.

So I assume there are people that are last minute depositing their weeks because they were not able to use it, and when they deposit do the weeks show up automatically in the on-line inventory? Or everything has to go through II (either automatic computer or a manual screening) first before being released on line?

When a week is deposited, II first confirms with Marriott (or other applicable resort or resort chain) that the II member has the rights to that week.

Next, if there is an ongoing request from a Marriott owner with a "comparable" week, II confirms that existing request. There are a number of tiebreakers to determine which of a number of requests would be matched with that week. That deposited week is available only to other Marriott owners during the first (normally) 24 days after it is deposited.

Next, if the week is still available, it shows up online to other Marriott owners that do an online search with a "comparable" week.

Next, if the week is still available after 24 days, it is available to non-Marriott owners that have an ongoing search.

If there are no comparable ongoing search requests, the week is then made available online to any II member that searches with a "comparable" week.

During Flexchange, the process is the same, except that the Marriott internal trading priority can be reduced to a period as short as three days, depending on how many days remain until the check-in date for the week.

Dave, am I reading this right?

That deposited week is available only to other Marriott owners during the first (normally) 24 days after it is deposited. Next, if the week is still available, it shows up online to other Marriott owners that do an online search with a "comparable" week.Next, if the week is still available after 24 days, it is available to non-Marriott owners that have an ongoing search.

Are you saying that the deposited week sits in the II computer for 24 days looking for an ongoing/request first match before it goes live on the website for other Marriott owners to see? As Johnny use to say, "I did not know that!"

No. That's partly why I had the first two sentences in your quoted text in separate paragraphs.

Except for Flexchange, this sentence is valid: "That deposited week is available only to other Marriott owners during the first (normally) 24 days after it is deposited."

There are two separate situations that apply in that 24-day period. At the beginning of the 24-day period, " if there is an ongoing request from a Marriott owner with a "comparable" week, II confirms that existing request." If there is no comparable week request, then "it shows up online to other Marriott owners that do an online search with a "comparable" week. That would still be within the 24-day period.

Only after that 24-day period do the fourth and fifth paragraphs of my post apply.

First be careful you are thinking about the 13 months out correctly. There is a 12/13 month Marriott reservation window directly for Marriott. With II you can also request any trade up to 24 months past the deposited week you are using. II doesn't tell you when a resort usually deposits so if you were putting in a request 2 years out, you'd still want to list acceptable resorts that you know won't be deposited for a year. So yes, you'll want to list any Marriott's up front if you know but can add options later if you need to. You'll automatically be considered for the Marriott internal trading preference whenever you are looking for a Marriott with a Marriott and a new deposit comes in to II but whether you get it depends on other factors including trade power. Also, if you ask for non Marriott's along with Marriott's and then later match to a Marriott, you will still pay the highest applicable exchange fee and not the special internal trading fee currently $89. There are ways around this if you dare by canceling your search and restarting it for Marriott's only.

DaveM: A naive question: I had my Marriott counselor put in a Request First for a one or two BR in Kauai (either resort) for specific week I had to have -- about 6 months ago. It just came thru -- but could I have been watching online too for something to come up, using that Request First week? If so, how does that work? We ended up giving a DSV I two BR for a Kauai 1 BR.

I have never used online II, so am learning. :)

The unit you had tied to the request-first exchange request would be listed in your exchangeable units ledger in your account. When "shopping", you would just refer to that unit as the unit you wished to use for the exchange. Or, you could just make up a reservation number for another unit in your listing using any 8 digit number starting with "8" and enter some advantageous dates :)

If the DSV unit was a summer unit, that's not a bad trade. KBC isn't my cup of tea (I like MAW much better), but lots of folks love it. I remember one guy who wanted cash and our NCV 2BR for a 1BR at KBC. I couldn't stop laughing :)
