I have an encore stay coming up on Sunday at Maui Ocean Club and just received a text asking for my flight information to "prepare for my stay." Has anyone else ever received this for an encore? I haven't on my last 2 so am pretty sure this is either specific to this property or some sort of scam. It also did not give me the option to opt out.

I’ve only received emails about my stays, Encores included.

We’ve done around half a dozen encores and never received a text like that.

You could email the pre-arrival team and/or your encore contact and say something along the lines of, ‘We received what looks like a phishing text that asks for specific arrival details and want to confirm that we expect to arrive at the resort at X:00 PM.’

Are they asking for confirmation number or just flight? If someone other than MOC knows you're going there you may have been hacked.

Tell them you're arriving by boat and see what they say, lol.

Exact text minus my name: we look forward to welcoming you to Marriott's Maui Ocean Club. For us to prepare for your arrival, we kindly ask for your airline and flight number to Maui. Safe travels, and we look forward to your visit! Aloha!

Yes, I’ve gotten this text from them before, it’s a standard part of their pre arrival process now. It helps them to know when people are going to arrive, and I suspect that asking for flight info gives them a more accurate idea than asking people what time they expect to arrive.

Knowing when people will probably arrive allows them to avoid making people who arrive earlier wait for their rooms to be cleaned.

Was there a link that went to an MVC site or just to text them back?

Just to text them back

Yes this is the correct answer. I arrived at the Cypress Harbor Villas and they asked me what our time of arrival was. They use this to assign rooms that will be ready. However it didn't let me pick any time before 4p so when I arrived at 1p they were surprised.

Can't see how that info could be used in a scam, or how a scammer would have your cell # and your MOC arrival info. If they did, they wouldn't bother texting you to alert you.

That's why asking for flight times makes more sense for the Hawaii properties. Since virtually everyone arrives by air, nobody is going to arrive at the resort earlier than, say, scheduled flight arrival plus one hour. But if they ASK people their arrival times, I'll bet they get answers across the board which often aren't right (people put the wrong times because they're too lazy to look, or they are confused by time changes, or whatever.)

Mainland properties don't ask for flight info because they have no idea whether you are flying, driving, taking the train, etc. and so they just ask you to estimate your arrival time. (They say "no check-in before 4 pm" but my experience is that if your room is ready, they'll give it to you.)

When they ask in the pre-arrival email form, I always pick the earliest time (4pm) regardless of when I actually might get there. We are usually driving, so it is often before that. But even if we might be an hour or two later, I still pick 4pm. I don't recall getting any texts or emails asking for our flight information when we went to Hawaii. Perhaps only at the Sheraton Kauai.

I definitely got the request for flight info at Maui Ocean Club last year. And your example illustrates why they (probably) ask for flight info instead of arrival time, because many people will put an earlier time just in case (I probably would too) and then the information isn't very useful for them in planning room availability.

Were your requests via text? I think the numbers we have on file with MVC, Vistana and II are all a land line. We have to always update our phone number to mobile so we get texts while at the resort.

Yes they were. So that's probably why you didn't get them.

I actually quite like the system they use, they disseminate lots of useful information via text while you are staying on property, and as soon as you check out, those texts stop. Occasionally there is a pre- or post-visit text like the one described here, but they are always pretty relevant and I never feel like they are spamming me with texts. And the ability to text them for services or with questions while on property is really handy. That's one area where they use the technology well.

I too like the texting system they use at the resorts, thus why I always add our mobile number at checkin. A few resorts we've felt spammed. I don't remember which one, but they sent the same text every morning. It wasn't even really about the day's activities, it was the same text, word for word.

I agree. I much prefer this to the calls/voicemails we used to get to the phone in our unit.

I will always reply to pre-arrival emails with flight/arrival information and requests, as this is helpful to both the resort and to ourselves for unit allocation and access.
I never reply to any texts, unless they are from a source I have regular communications with and typically I would report them as spam.

I like your strategy bazzap, I think I am going to employ the same.
