I am thinking of exchanging into Galveston this May and I am interested to know if the Gulf Coast area is still going through major repairs. Would it be worth my while to visit the area, or is it too soon since the hurricane hit?

The Seawall area is all up and running - restaurants, shops, hotels, etc..
The Strand (downtown area) - it looks like a ghost town except when the ships arrive!

If you plan on being at the beach and driving the Seawall to eat, you'll be fine. Let me know if you have specific questions, I'll try to help.

We are heading there for a stay this week. I will provide an update while I am there. I did call and check to see if some of the Seawall restaurants were up and running and they were (Several of the Laundry's chain were open).

Most all the restaurants are open just a few small ones got blown out. That is on the Seawall. Now down on The Strand that's another story. Everything is closed except maybe a few shops might be open.

As for Seaside it is in good shape except that the elevators in the Presidential Buildings are still not working, the last I heard.

I agree most things on Seawall Blvd are open. The Strand has improved slightly since we were there in October but still has a long way to go.

Make a trip on the ferry (it is a free ride) to the Bolivar Penninsula, OMG, they have barely made a dent is most clean up efforts, the destruction was nearly a total wipe out.
