For those who like film noir, characterized by hardboiled crime mysteries, the classic gangster moll or femme fatale, black & white films with low lighting and shadow, and a storyline that leaves you rooting for the good bad guy (as opposed to the bad bad guy), I highly recommend Turner Classic Movies Noir Alley, which airs each Saturday night at midnight Eastern Time, 9pm Pacific.
The films are selected and introduced by Eddie Muller, himself the recognized expert of the genre, who has written three books on the subject and hosts the most respected noir film festival in the world, held every January in San Francisco.
Sometimes the movies he picks are ones you've heard of, but most are not. In fact, Muller has worked successfully with the UCLA Film School to rescue noir films that were in danger of being lost forever on decaying celluloid but which have been re-mastered and digitized for time immemorial.
Now, just as I am recommending this to my fellow TUGgers, I see that for some reason, TCM has decided to give Noir Alley a break during the entire month of August. But, if you bookmark this page, you can see the upcoming film schedule beginning again on September 2. If you're a film noir fan, you'll love it. If you're not, maybe not so much. And if you don't really know what film noir is, I encourage you to give it a try. They don't make movies like these anymore.
