Parents have had a Maui Hill fixed 1 week timeshare (july) for 30+ years and just want me to take over mx fees and change name as they no longer use. Figure I can use it or rent it but I want to do the transfer process the smartest way. Any tips?

Depends on what system it’s with. Don’t take it if you won’t mostly use it.

What do you mean by what system it’s with?
I do think we will use it maybe every other year at least for a few years more. We enjoy it but I just don’t want my every year vacation in Maui.

That is the resort but is that the company info you are inquiring?
What the maint? Who does it trade with? Beachfront? Ask yourself this. Do you want to be stuck with a TS you’ll never be able to get rid of? If he’s, then take it over lol. I’d keep it in their name and see how it works for you the next few years. If not, let it go.

Maint fees are almost 1k a year. They have a membership with RCI for it and I believe I can use Trading places too. It’s across from beach. We’ve always enjoyed using it. I just want to handle paperwork transfer in the most sense way is my main question.
I don’t want it kept in their names if I’m paying as then I’d be a guest and not owner and to avoid other issues.

How many points in RCI? If not points how many TPU do you get when you deposit the week in RCI?

I get 59 trading power for the week on RCI
Ok that’s very good. Then keep it, worst case scenario is you use RCI a lot if you don’t want to go to Maui.

Thanks for all your responses. Do you simplistic way to transfer to my name? Someone said I should buy it even for a low cost vs just gift it to me or name change on paperwork?

I’m not familiar with gifting and changing the name. I’d say contact your HOA or resort and ask how they go about doing it. Your parents may just be able to ad you to the account so you can make changes and use without being a guest or you can use LT Transfers and pay a few hundred bucks and they will transfer the deed into your name.

make sure the resort doesn’t have ROFR so contact the owner ship and find out more

Many of us use www.lttransfers.com for low cost transfers. The resort should not put up barriers to transfer between family members. You should know that taxes are high for Hawaii and Maui County timeshares, that you will be paying even if you don't use it. Also, to use it, there is that little deal about airfare to use it. The TS gets substantial trade power units (TPU on TUG), but there is also a membership fee ($100/yr) and almost $300 for each exchange.

Just so you know what the costs are for owning in Hawaii.

We own at Maui Hill. It trades through RCI, but we have a membership with Trading Places Maui, that we don't pay for since we are owners at Maui Hill. That is who we do our trades through since we trade back into Maui Hill.

A July week on Maui will rent well in those years you do not want to use it.

We stayed at Maui Hill once too - lovely resort! Last year my dad added my sister and myself to the deed for his Hawaii TS. LT Transfers handled everything efficiently and at reasonable cost. I’d highly recommend them.

Practice for a few years first.

you pay maintenance fees and take responsibility for either using it or renting it out.
after a few years, you will know if you like having it or if is too much burden

They can write it into their will and you can accept it or reject it upon inheriat

You need to call the resort. Several of our independent resorts allow you to transfer between family members for little to no cost. Hawaii I believe is a little more complicated than other states but if you go to the resorts website under owners section you may find your answers.
