Suggestions for a new desktop computer

I've tried the search option, and thought I'd find something more recent than 2009.
My Acer Aspire laptop is showing signs of being terminal, and since DH has a laptop, I think I'll go back to a desktop. This one is less than 2 yrs. old!
I play the farm games on Facebook, and they take a lot of memory. I have 4 gbs now, so I'll need at least that much, but I don't play other games, watch movies, or any other "exotic" things. (I don't pole dance, either.) ;)
I just want something solid and reliable with a good amount of RAM, and preferably an Intel processor.
I've looked at some of the HPs online, and I'm curious about the All in ones, too. Right now, I'm using my old E-machine, that I bought in '05. Planned obsolence is getting shorter...? Any suggestions?

Start with a visit to Costco, and use what you find there as a baseline for other shopping you might want to do.

I say Costco because you can return the computer for up to 90 days for a full refund, no questions asked. No other retailer I know of will be so generous.

Your needs are basic, so any brand name computer that has the peripherals and features you like should do the trick. Go with a machine you like - and be sure to try typing on the keyboard and using the monitor to show you different pages and images, so you have an idea of what you're getting.

I'd suggest staying away from all-in-one designs unless you need one. They're hard to use, hard to repair, and they offer only limited upgrade options.

Have fun!

Dave

Thanks, Dave...That's extremely helpful. I'm kind of scared of the all in ones, anyway. We don't belong to Costco, but I'll bet I could buy something there... ya' think? Jean

Join Costco for the $50 membership fee. It's good for a year. Buy your computer. Check it out and decide if you'll keep it beyond the 90-day return period. At any time during the year's membership, if you feel you aren't using it, or it's not a good deal for you, they'll cancel your membership and give you back your $50. You have absolutely nothing to lose.

But chances are, once you check out the things Costco sells, you'll keep the membership. The $50 fee is easily returned through savings on the many things they sell. Even if it's only in savings at their gas station - it'll pay you back to have the membership. Promise.

Thanks so much. That sounds perfect for me...but I have to wait until my son in law looks it over. I hope it isn't gone by then. I'm ready to buy it now. . Jean ;)

Tiger Direct and NewEgg sell a lot of refurbished computers - with the money you save you could go to SquareTrade and get a warranty if it makes you feel better. I saw this one the other day and thought it was a darn good deal for anyone looking for a new desktop:

I recently went from a desktop to a laptop, and now I'm looking for a new printer. I would say that New Egg, Tiger Direct and Amazon seem to offer the best prices for all sorts of computer stuff, but it helps to have an idea as to which brands and features you want going in.

To get there, I usually start out with reviews on www.cnet.com, www.consumersearch.com and www.bestcovery.com (the later two being digests of other reviews).

Thanks so much, everyone, for the great suggestions.
NightNurse, I did order the Tiger computer from the link you posted. It sounds perfect, and I sent the link to my SIL, and he said, "Better grab it before they're gone!". Nice reinforcement to my thinking. We've had Tiger computers in the past, with very good luck. I really appreciate this, and Tuggers, as always. Jean

I have 2 of the HP all-in-ones and think they are great. I would definitely buy them again.
