I put a unit on hold at OBBC II for 2008 and then called RCI to find out the unit #.

The unit # I was given is PD0606xx. I know that this does not correspond to unit numbers at the resort, so I called the OBBC for help.

The answer I was given suprised me thoroughly. She said that RCI assigns those PD0606XX unit numbers when a week has not yet been deposited and they are puting it into the system based on expected deposits. Another words, they are giving me this exchange based on the hope(based on prior experience) that an owner will deposit the week that I have exchanged into.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Are the units at OBBC II fixed weeks/units? I wondered if it meant that the unit had not yet ben confirmed, but that is not what she said.

This is a summer week and there are only about 36 total units for my check in day.(18 beachfront, 18 not) What if the weeks don't get deposited?

I have never heard of that at other resorts on the OBX, but it sounds like RCI is starting to use some of the inventory practices of airlines if it is true. I wouldn't expect them to give you a bump voucher, though!

One of the quirks at OBBC/OBBCII that may or may not have something to do with this is that some weeks there are in the Peppertree/Equivest points program, although those are mostly off season.

Unless RCI has changed drastically since I left, the explanation you were given does not hold water. They cannot put a unit on "hold' or "confirm" a unit for a member if the unit has not yet been banked and verified by the resort. In fact, a unit not yet banked would not even show as "available" anywhere in their system.
Space from the RCI points system would not be in their weeks database- the two enxhange systems are completely incompatible- so it could not be viewed as available for a weeks member, not to mention confirmed.
That unit number is definitely a generic dummy that does not refer to a specific unit; unit numbers similar to that used to show up frequently from resorts and points-based vacation clubs that bulk-banked weeks into the RCI weeks system. What usually happened with such a unit number is that the resort woudl assign a specific unit that matched the type of unit that number referred to at check in. The system is somehow able to match those numbers to a specific size and type of unit at the resort...and RCI employee coudl give you features, square footage, etc from their "compare" screen, which isn't available online.

I had the same thing happen when I booked two 1 bdr units at Outer Banks Beach Club I a few weeks ago for next June. I booked one as a straight weeks exchange and one as a points exchange in the weeks system and they had the exact same unit number for each (PD060613). I questioned the RCI guy and he said the units would be assigned at check-in. I called OBBC and they insisted that as soon as the exchange is made, the units have already been assigned. I was at work when I talked to OBBC and I didn't have the PD number handy to ask about and I forgot to call back.

So although my chances of getting a oceanfront building statistically should be 50/50, I assume my chances in reality will be slim and none. If there are points units with Sat check in should I assume they will be in the second row?

Also does anyone know about the water temperature in late June? We just got back, and this year the water was VERY cold. I think this may be unusual as someone just told me that the water at the Jersey shore is currently only 57 degrees. Normally, it is about 70 by now.

Steve, the Equivest intervals exchange through Interval International, so it is not likely the unit would be part of the Equivest points system.

Candid's explanation points to a deposit from a points program, and Peppertree/ Equivest's points program is the only one OBBC/OBBCII have been involved with (and that was after they were mostly sold out as week resorts). This becomes more and more curious.

The water is significantly colder than usual right now on the OBX. The water north of Cape Hatteras is influenced by the cold Labrador Current, while south of the cape, it is influenced by the warm Gulf Stream. The beaches on the OBX are always a bit cooler than those on the Crystal Coast, but this time of the year they are usually pleasant for swimming.
