Just reported that starz is pulling first run movies including sony and Disney from netflix at the beginning of next year.

Seriously? For streaming or for DVD rentals???

Katherine

Well, that sucks. Of course, there's lots of time between now and beginning of year for them to work this out.

Pretty sure that would be for streaming. By the time Starz has the right to offer movies to Netflix for streaming, they are not the most recent selections. Pretty much like paying for Starz on your cable/satellite service.

Not a big loss IMO.

Cheers!

It's the streaming video. The talks have ended. I read that starz wants alot of money. If there is a new deal it will cost netflix alot more than before.

HLN reports that Netflix will lose ALL access to Starz movies, not just streaming.

I think it's only streaming, as there aren't "Starz movies" per se, when it comes to DVDs. Except, I suppose, Starz original tv programming, which I've never watched. 90% of our streaming Netflix watching is kids' tv shows, so I suspect I'll barely notice.

I am hoping that HLN was incorrect. I am annoyed enough by the Netlfix rate changes as it is. I just went on my account to see if I could drop the streaming. If I did that I could then get only two DVDs at a time maximum.

Sitting here at 30,000 feet (I don't use Netflix) it seems to me that the writing is on the wall that Netflix is going to see monstrous increases in its cost of product. If I am right, the cost of being a Netflix user will keep going up and up. For the sake of Netflix users I hope I am wrong.

I just went on a dropped the streaming option, keeping the one DVD at a time option for $7.99/mo. We only watch one DVD/week, and I find that the streaming choices are not for the most current movies.

The press release I read dealt ONLY with streaming distribution. Talks for a new streaming contract have broken off.

It has been reported that Netflix was paying Starz 25M per year for streaming rights. They now reportedly wanted 400M for the new contract which would start in February -- a 16X (1600%) increase.

From Starz' perspective, they think streaming availability via Netflix is greatly reducing the number of people that would be subscribing to their service via cable or satellite, and that the revenue from Netflix didn't come close to making up for this lost revenue.

As one of the Moderators at www.dbstalk.com put it, "Basically, if you want access to Starz content, ya gotta pay Starz so they can buy it."

Netflix recently hammered out a streaming deal with Epix, which gives them product from Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM, and some others.

Here's one recent article: http://thisismynext.com/2011/09/01/netflix-starz-deal-lost-price-hike/

I just read that dish network will debut a new streaming video service to compete with netflix.

I think Starz represents Disney too so kids shows will really be effected! Streaming movie choices at Netflix are really mediocre so we hardly ever use it, but for kids it's fantastic for their favorite TV shows and most 2nd rate (not recently in the theater) movies. We may drop down to 1 DVD at a time too if this happens. UGH. Katherien

Amazon's Instant Video is good for the price

Amazon.com prime members get 2nd day shipping on most orders and free instant videos of movies and television shows for only 79$ per year. The free videos are not first run or new releases. They are excellent quality. There is a charge for new release movies. For people like me who are heavy duty buyers of goods on Amazon it is a gift because the 79$ for shipping is a bargain all by itself.

I have seen nothing online indicating that the disks available via Netflix are affected by any of this, only streaming content. I'd think disk availability is determined by the movie studios rather than an intermediary like Starz.

Is there any way to know which streaming titles on Netflix are Starz and which are not? Does Starz have a site where they list their properties?

If you log into Netflix on the web, one of the links near the top of my landing page under "Watch Instantly" is "Starz Play" and you can see all of the Starz movies in one place. If I go to my instant queue, unfortunately it doesn't display whether they're Starz movies on the full list, but if you hover over the titles in the instant queue, the pop-up will have the Starz play logo (or not) at the bottom. So if I hover over Tangled, it shows the Starz play logo, but if I hover over Phineas and Ferb (a Disney tv series), the Starz play logo is not there - leading me to believe it's just full-length movies from those studios that are affected.

There's still a lot of time between now and when their current contract expires to find a solution. Walking away from negotiations is sometimes just part of the negotiation process. Tho, perhaps Netflix is trying to make other deals to increase content availability while letting Starz go. The people who run Netflix are fairly sharp, and I suspect they'll find some way of keeping our business.
