Just left an owner's update session at Westin Kaanapali. Our salesman was a biggie with huge window office, etc. My understanding (from TUG) is that if you own a non-mandatory Starwood timeshare (Westin Mission Hills) and want to sell, the new owner will lose the opportunity to exchange within the SVN such as trading to Westin Maui. Hence, lower resale value.

When I mentioned this to this man, he said no, what they lose is getting Starpoints but the StarOptions are available to them. Is he right?

Where in our Big Book is the clarificaton of this? I am in Maui and can't research it. Thanks in advance for getting this straight for me.

No - you lose Starpoints whether the resort is mandatory or not and you lose Staroptions if the resort isn't mandatory. Imagine that - a TS salesman who didn't know what he was talking about! :D

Here is the TUG Advice page with Chris's article - http://www.tug2.net/advice/Starwood_Vacation_Network.htm

Denise is right,

If you buy a voluntary resort resale you don't get starpoints or Staroptions. Basically, you get only the resort you buy and nothing else.

Thanks Denise, that is what I was using (Chris' article) to ask that question of this salesman. Is there anywhere in their manual that I can read when I get home? I have this salesman's business card and want to email him the paragraph that disputes what he said. This was a very high level guy who knew everyone in that office. His daughter is on the cover of Cosmopolitan and will be on Sports Illustrated (not that this pertains to the problem).

This "high level salesman" is clearly lying. This ebay auction of a Mission Hills Platinum unit for $6600 shows how destructive Starwood's policy is towards non-mandatory resort values. Kierland with similar amenities on the other hand sells around $23,000.

Please ask this salesman to explain about how the marketplace is wrong ?

If I was a Mission Hills owner I would hopping mad and will never again talk to Starwood let alone go to an "owner's update(sic)".

How sad for Mission Hill owners.

that sale was very sad for the owner but sure was great for the buyer. i was so tempted but we truly do not need any more timeshare. i still have to buy my developer weeks to requalify the ones i just bought. we will start the process in august when we go to orlando.if we sell our house.:wall:

Boy did that put a damper on my Maui vacation :( When we bought MH they didn't even have that category of mandatory vs non-mandatory because they only had a handfull of resorts. Oh well, at least we can drive to it and enjoy the few years we have left and let the kids worry about selling it. Remember Starwood owners, the company cares tiddly-poop about us owners; it's all in revenue getting.
