Today our internet went out. I reset the modem after power cycling it and nothing. I then called Century Link only to get automated help that kept looping back to nowhere. Finally received a text from their tech support. Ten minutes of the same questions to verify our account. They are sending a tech over at the end of the week.

I went outside and opened the phone junction box and looked at the connection. They installed a DSL to phone jack connector on the phone jack. The used a silicon type grease. I pulled it apart just to see what the deal was. Pushed it into place and now the internet works.

Now I'm thinking of getting a Starlink mini or regular that I can use at home or at the cabin. Maybe even a road trip. Anyone have one of these and if so, how do you like it ?

Thanks

Bill

Starlink is a good solution for those who cannot obtain reliable alternatives.

Do you have AT&T Cell service where you live? If so, I'd suggest it's probably cheaper to get an unlocked hotspot and get the ~$22 a month tablet internet plan.

The internet went down again. I thought that I fixed it but there is definity something wrong.

I saw that tmobile has 5g internet in our area. Since our phone plan is with tmobile maybe but I'm thinking Starlink so we can have internet at the cabin. We don't have access to phone service or cable at the cabin. I kind of like it that way . People still drop by to say hi without calling because they can't call.

Dude at work lives off the grid in the hills of Arkansas. He relies on it to work remotely just like the rest of the gang from Idaho. It is reliable as far as I understand.

Bill, since you have your Cell-phones with T-Mobile, you would be able to get 5G home internet from them at a discounted rate. Of course, the T-Mobile 5G home internet device will not work at your cabin if there is no T-Mobile cell service there. FYI, regarding TV service, I recently installed a small antenna which connects to a small device near my TV made by a company called "Zapperbox". The Zapperbox device then connects to the TV with an HDMI cable. The Zapperbox device contains a tuner and a DVR so you can view and record the off-air TV stations in your area (assuming that you have some in your area). All of the TV stations in the USA now transmit with a digital signal so the picture quality is excellent. I am able to receive the four networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, plus a couple of public TV stations and a couple more private ones). If the TV station transmitters for your area are farther than about 40 miles from your home, then the signals will be too weak, and this won't work. Anyway, I was able to cancel my basic Cable TV service which saved my like $60 per month.

I fixed the internet again by pushing the phone jack adapter. I think it's shot.

My grand daughter lives next door and they went down to Best Buy and bought a Starlink Standard. They had what we and everyone in our area has and that is DSL. Our download speed is supposed to be 40+ Mbps but we usually get less than 15 Mbps. I just ran a speed test and it was only 11 Mbps. The Starlink next door is downloading at 180+ Mbps. I was told some of the speed tests are near 240 Mbps.

I'm probably going to cancel our DSL internet and go with a Starlink standard. We pay about $74 a month for the DSL service. I think Starlink is about $80 a month.

have multiple friends who have gone to starlink minis and have zero complaints, heck they even put them on fishing boats going offshore these days....broadband internet 50 miles offshore to watch the game and catch fish!

We pay $120 for starlink. They offer slightly different plans based on location. You have to calibrate the antenna carefully in order to get the fastest speeds - simple instructions anyone can do, just follow the directions in the app.

Starlink was the only internet service available in our area post fire in January, and allowed us to view our cameras remotely (after we got a generator…) which was (and remains) a priority due to security concerns. It took Spectrum about four months to get service back to the area, and since then has gone down multiple times (same with Frontier). Starlink has had only one outage of about a few hours this year, so we made the decision to cancel cable and just go with Starlink, even though it's more expensive for slower speeds. So far, when I perform a speed test I tend to see ~200 down, which is more than enough.

I do have unlimited data on our phones with T-Mobile but we have too many devices with some like the security cameras needing to be connected all of the time. It was a good idea though.

will say i do wish that the tmobile wireless/cube internet was available in my area... have two friends with that for something like 50 a month and their speeds beat my xfinity cable!

I might get one but cleaning off the snow can be a PITA🄓

they are heated! heck some people have issues with them getting too hot if put in enclosures!

Me too. T-Mobile internet is not available at my location. We do use T-Mobile data on our phones but it isn't 5g.

The internet guy just left. This guy was different in that he actually knew what was going on. Long story short, he was able to get things going. I did order a Starlink Standard which should be here in the morning.

My plan is to use them both for a month. I'm probably going to keep the Starlink so I can add the roam feature so we can have internet in the mountains. I'm not sure I will like this because instead of doing outdoor mountain activities, most visitors will be staring at their phones or streaming things on the TV.

I might end up being the area hotspot is another consideration.

Worse case is I have to unplug it and say its a technical problem, lol.

I have the Starlink Standard up and running. The antenna is just laying on the deck and not roof mounted yet. I'm getting around 120 Mbps. The most I ever had with the DSL is about 20 Mbps but the usual was under 10 Mbps. This should improve my poker, lol. Probably getting those reservations too.
