Stackable or all in one washer and dryer?

My dad's bathroom needs remodeling and we decided to push out the wall to make it bigger, but that causes loss of space in the laundry area. I know about stackables, but I have heard about a new all in one washer/dryer. Has anyone tried one?
Thanks,
Liz

Liz,
I used to own a condo at Avista in Myrtle Beach and they had the all-in-one W/D there. I didn't really care for it. It took a long time to dry, and you can't wash one load while another is drying like you can with separate W/D.

We've got a pair of LG Tromm's stacked at our house and they work very well. Because of some built-in cabinets at the top of the space, we didn't get the pedestal for the combination and as such we do have to squat a bit to load and unload the washer.

That's annoying...but not a real problem now.

'Stackables' used to just mean the smaller top load washer w/ dryer above it (I'm sure we've all seen them in at least one t/s we've stayed in). However, with the rise in popularity of front-load washers, I think you can take one of them, pair it with a convential dryer, and stack them. Granted they will take up some extra room, but you have the advantage of fullsize machines with only the footprint of one.

I had the same experience. I put several of these units in some of our rental properties and people complained about how long they take.

I also agree about having to stoop over to load the front loading washers, but more annoying is that you can't soak items by lifting the lid- you know after the water has filled but before aggitation. It's also trickier to add garments, as when I open the door a little water drips out.

I think you can still buy the stacked units with a top loading washer. JMO for what it's worth- about 2 cents.

We were just in Sears today waiting to be waited on. There were 3 stackable, like apt size washers and dryers along the wall. The thing that I noticed is that the washer lid didn't open all the way because of the dryer on top. That would mean that you have to hold the lid open while you load the washer with your other hand. Not for me, but we weren't buying washer or dryer.

We've used this kind of arrangement in several timeshares. They had some kind of "hook" that kept the washer lid open so you would have two hand free.

Maytag

We have a Maytag stackable pair that we've had about a year. Each are full-sized; in fact they wash larger loads than the top loaders we had before. The only thing I don't like about them is it takes twice as long to do a load. I find I do larger loads, but sometimes you want to do smaller ones.

I have the Maytag stackable pair also. Full size, front loaders, so there's no problem with the doors, and the doors can be reversed if you need them to open to the right instead of to the left.

I think there's also a gas version.

It works just like a normal front loading washer and dryer pair. You can do small loads, large loads, etc, it adapts to the size of the load.

Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, should all carry it.

We lived in Singapore for a few months, and the service apartment had one of those combo washer/dryer units. Hated it. :crash: By the time we got home from work, we could do at most one load in an evening due to the long time it took.

I would think a stackable set would work much better.

We have a Maytag stackable pair , top load washer and front load dryer. We have had them for about 10 years in the walk-in closet in the master bedroom. Love them, they are great! Are you going to put in an overflow pan? My daughter and son-in-law have regular side by side washer/dryer on the second floor and have had overflow problems twice. Something to conider, think most codes require it for new construction.

I vote for stackable frontloaders. I have the Kenmore H2 high efficiency front load washer. It is designed to be stackable, however, I just have mine side-by-side. You don't have to give up size or convenience.

My brother had an all-in-one and his wife hated it. She complained it would take over 3 hrs. to do one load of laundry. Also, she didn't like the fact that you can't be doing another load of wash while one is drying. She said everything wrinkled horribly--worse than any other machine she'd used.

I would suggest you research the Consumer Reports on washing machines. The lastest issue talks about differences between the new front loading washing machines and the "new and improved" top loading- thier opinion is due to the government requirements the top loading are not cleaning the clothes as well as the front loading.

I also used the all in one unit- but that was about 38 years ago in a rental-hopefully- they have improved- but- you still can only do one load at a time. Did not like it at all-
