Did anyone else the the "Spend $50, get 1k StarPoints" email? It's apparently a targeted promo, so not everyone is eligible. I got it in my email, so I'm eligible. Here's hoping you are, too.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=805303

If you don't want to wade through the thread, here's a c&p of the email I received yesterday. The e-mail came directly from Amex and noted the last 5 numbers of my SPG Amex on the e-mail. So if you didn't receive it, be sure you're signed up on AMEX to receive promos, etc. (Also check your statement as sometimes these promos are listed there.)

"Just use your Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express at checkout, and you can earn 1,000 bonus Starpoints® for a purchase of $50 or more at Amazon.com now through March 31st.1 That’s in addition to the points you can normally earn for purchases.2

No matter which of the millions of items available at Amazon.com you choose, use your Card at checkout to take advantage of the protection, benefits and rewards American Express provides.

Shop now at Amazon.com."

Currently I receive points for just about everything that I purchase online because I am diligent about using portals, such as the ones on United, Delta, and Marriott. Currently Starwood does not have a portal. I'm hoping that this email is a sign that they are considering following Marriott's suit and opening a shopping portal as it's an easy, free way to earn points.

For the uninitiated, a portal is simply a place where you go to online BEFORE clicking to go to another online vendor (e.g. Eddie Bauer). By using these portals, you earn additional points in addition to what you earn by using a loyalty credit card.

Here's United's shopping portal.

If I wanted to shop at Eddie Bauer, I'd click here first and select Eddie Bauer. According to the site, I'll receive 2 United Miles for every dollar I spend at Eddie Bauer. So if I order $100 worth of merchandise (before s&h, which doesn't count), I'll get 200 UnitedMiles. And if I pay with my United credit card, I'll receive an additional 100 miles, for a total of 300.

As I said before, Starwood currently doesn't have a portal. It'd be great if they started one.

I got it - but I don't need anything from Amazon right now. I wonder if it applies to Amazon Gift Cards?

Hmm, good question. It says it has to be for goods or services, but it doesn't specifically exclude gift cards.

Me? I've been needing new underwear. Seriously. ;)

(1) To be eligible purchase must be made at Amazon.com between March 18, 2008 and March 31, 2008. A minimum single transaction of $50 with your Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express is required to earn the 1,000 bonus points. Credit will be awarded to your account 6-8 weeks after promotion ends. Offer valid for a single purchase only. Offer is good for solicited Cardmembers only. Charges for payments made via PayPal and other online payment intermediaries do not qualify. Purchases made at IMDb and ShopBop do not apply. Credits for purchase returns will result in a corresponding reversal of the 1,000 bonus points. POID K569:0005. Bonus ID 3425.

(2) “Eligible Spending” includes purchases of goods or services, which have not been returned or otherwise rescinded, and are not subject to a credit; it does NOT include fees, Finance Charges, Cash Advances (including the use of checks, line activators, automated teller machines, or other means of accessing your account), Balance Transfers, or adjustments to your account. We reserve the right not to award any Starpoints for transactions we determine are not made with the good faith intention of consuming the item charged.

Lisa - when you buy your undies, can you please let me know if there is any indication on the website that you are getting the AMEX promo?

DH and I both got the promo, so I may buy 2-$50 gift cards if I can verify that I'm getting the points.

Thanks!

No, there is no indication on the website that I'm getting the AMEX promo. I did use the link provided, though, just in case.
