The ATL airport used a marketing slogan in its condolence tweet:

They since deleted it and added a new post.

Yes I did see that report from yesterday. The Flightline of any airport is a very dangerous place to work.
Loud noises, big machinery, trucks and vehicles all at a frenetic pace.

Delta said the explosion occurred while wheel components were being disassembled for maintenance at a wheel and brake shop. The parts were not attached to a plane at the time, the airline said.

Sad to say but under controlled and normal circumstances aircraft tires don't explode. There must have been a "Quality Escape".

I wonder if the airplane had a split rim wheel. I've heard of these exploding on equipment.

You are likely correct. Large tires for heavy equipment are more likely to use a split rim.

The flight deck of an aircraft carriers are manned by young Navy sailors over the age of 18 years old on the ocean seas around the world. Protecting the freedom of the United States of America. That is a fact 24/7 and 365 days a year.

Do you have a citation for the italicized quote? I have not heard that Delta stated it was during disassembly.

Taken from the 1st post where the NPR article is linked

That's kind of odd for a technician to remove a split rim wheel without deflating it first. It seems the tire exploded because it was still inflated while they tried to separate the tire from the wheel.

Even an automobile tire repairer understand you must deflate a tire on a rim machine before you can change it.

This is a safety violation. OSHA will now exam Delta tire changing procedures. IMHO.
