So I now have two reservations for mid april - Playa Andaluza and Son Antem. Yes, I know they are not in the same place and one is on an Island.
We have a week to spend after our trip to Brussels before we fly out of Madrid.

For those who have been or know the ares, for that time of year which would you pick.
Couple in mid 50's so no adventure sports. Wife likes looking at architecture, culture, food and water.

The weather is typically similar at these resorts in April, a little warmer on the Costa del Sol than in Mallorca but with a risk of some rain in both.
Son Antem is an inland rural resort set around 2 golf courses, so a car really is a must. Palma is a wonderful city, some 30 minutes away and there are plenty of other great towns, villages, beaches and bays to visit on the island.
Playa Andaluza is on the coast, with shops, restaurants etc within walking distance and well located for visiting Estepona, Marbella, Puerto Banus and the many inland white villages.
We own, stay at and like both (as well as Marbella Beach)
In April, I would probably choose Playa Andaluza of the two resorts.

Thanks for the information. Plan to get a car either. Have a corporate rate that makes it about cheap.
Suggesting Playa because of the weather or just more to do/see that time of year.
Should add that will take a day trip/flight to Barcelona, we are having a brief meeting with a Chocolatier there.

No, the weather should be similar, perhaps just a little more consistent on the mainland (hopefully?)
As it is a relatively quiet time of year though, after the early April Easter school holidays (more so in Mallorca), I would just find that there are more choices of places to see / things to do / places to eat… within a closer distance at Playa.
Also at Son Antem then the villa pools will not be open, even just for sunbathing (if warm enough), so you would need to use the spa pool or now as reopened under Marriott branding again the associated hotel pool. And apart from the 3 on site restaurants, anywhere else is a 10 minute drive away.
Don’t get me wrong, Son Antem is our favourite European MVC resort, but we go in June and September.

Agree with Barry, for what you have said you want to do, Playa is a better choice.
If you had said you wanted quiet relaxation, no water view, a bit of golf and some exploring I'd have gone with Son Antem, but there is no water view there.
Flights to Barcelona might be easier/more convenient from one airport and not another, so that might sway your choice.

I'd echo what Barry has written. The weather tends to be more consistent on the Costa Del Sol although there isn't much in it however I have experienced an entire week of rain there in April. For food, Playa is close to Benahavis which is a small hill town famed for its food culture, there are a number of very good restaurants there and a few in nearby Estepona and Marbella. Ronda and Malaga offer some fantastic sights and architecture without being too much of a drive away.

Palma is my favourite Spanish city and offers a wealth of architectural sights as well as a plethora of bars, restaurants and shopping. There's also the wooden train to Soller, a fantastic town in the mountains, with spectacular views as it winds its way up the Tramuntana mountains. Then you have all the other towns and villages in the mountains such as Deia and Valldemossa. It's great to have a car and work your way through them.

Relaxation wise I prefer Son Antem. Of the two it has the only outdoor heated pool which is joined with the indoor pool (you swim between them via an opening) and has a much better spa. If you want a heated pool at Playa the only option is the indoor one which can become a bit crowded as owners who live nearby have year round access to the resort even if they're not staying there.

Next year we'll be staying at both, Playa in mid February and Son Antem in May. No particular reason for choosing those locations at those times of the year, it's just how things worked out. February in either location is going to be better weather wise than Portsmouth however there seems to be more open in terms of restaurants on the Costa Del Sol in February than Mallorca.
