We will have one week between our Naples (week) and Rome (week) to fill with exploring southern Italy by train or bus.
Can you suggest some interesting places we should visit on our way from Naples to Rome. We travel light and can stay 2-3 days in one place if day trips by public transportation are an option.
We have 6-7 days to fill. Thanks.

Amalfi Coast of course.

If you can do all of what you want in Naples without covering Amalfi, then head that bit further south to Salerno and explore from there.
If you want to stretch it, take the train all the way along the south west coast and spend a few days on Sicily.

TY Hindsite, I plan to take train to Salerno after a week in Naples, but cannot decide where to travel next. No Sicily this time. Probably to Bari, but there must be other places I could visit, but don’t know about. Suggestions?

If you can look up the BBC travels series:

Clive Myrie's Italian Road Trip

He covered the south of italy, and that might have some pointers, I can't remember the names of some of the towns in Southern Italy that he visited, but I was surprised by some of the interesting places. Some might be reachable even without a car, or you may get some inspiration. The South of Italy is quite different from the north as its a lot less industrialised and more Mediterranean influenced. There will be some gems to be found, but I haven't spent time there to give specifics.

Sorrento, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast , Capri.

But further south my absolute favs were Matera and Lecce - but those are in the other direction- further south.

Since you have a week, you can really go anywhere in Italy, or even neighboring countries.

We are focusing on Naples area (week1), Rome (week 3) and I am looking for suggestions for (week2) exploring Southern Italy.
After Italy we have two weeks in Greece and two weeks in Czechia already planned.

Have you been to northern Italy?

We visited Sorrento and Capri as well as Herculaneum on or previous stay in Naples, but feel the area has so much to offer that we are returning. I’ll research your “further South” suggested places.
Oh I almost forgot another great place!

Highly recommend visiting Pompeii and nearby Mount Vesuvius.

My favorite memory of Pompeii, besides the bordello...
Was an American tourist asking for the salt shaker on our dining table in broken Italian.
My reply: "Could you be an American, like us?"

I appreciate all your suggestions and finalized our Apulia/Puglia week stay. Apartment in the center of Bari and day trips to Trani, Biscelglie, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Ostuni, Brindisi and Lecce, all by train.

Following week is Rome and again I’ll welcome your suggestions.
