So I listen to my XM satellite radio for months and now one minute it works and I get back into my car and no sound. Suggestions of things to check before I take it to the shop? The channels appear on the display as do the song titles and artists as if everything is fine - but no sound - at all. The car radio (AM/FM) itself works fine - tuning, sound, etc. Thanks techies!

Contact XM and ask them to "refresh your radio." If you've set up your online account (xmradio.com) you can do it yourself from their website. This may not solve the problem, but since the radio works correctly with other media, the issue is probably related to your XM signal. Refreshing it will basically reconnect your radio with their satellite.

Good luck!

I noticed an outage last week in the rental car I was driving through the Florida Keys lasting probably a minute or so. I know here in LA, XM has a terristrial transmitter where the majority of FM stations are located in addition to the satellite signal.

I don't know if XM is having issues or if it was the radio in the car, but I thought I'd mention it.

One way to test is to go to a Circuit City or Best buy, and check out their satellite radio kiosk. If they are able to receive channels, then you can probably assume XM's tranmission is not at fault.

We Needed To Replace Our Antenna

After working fine for a couple of years, it just went out. The system sometimes looked like it should be working and sometimes just the word antenna appeared. I tried it on another system to satisfy myself that it was the antenna. Then bought new one at Best Buy. Price there was almost identicall to XM's online price even with sales tax. My brother-in-law told me he needed to do same thing once.

Turns out that the radio had "set" itself to a different channel than what my car radio was tuned to for XM. The guy at Best Buy said that that sometimes happens for no apparent reason - so it was a quick and free fix to go into settings and dial in the correct setting again - now I know how to do it myself. Puzzling. In the meantime, the merger of Sirius and XM has fouled up some of my favorite channels:(
