They're wonderful pictures, but don't expect to see that level of drama. There has been significant "digital darkroom" work on those photos to create the images shown.

Yeah - images aside that's quite an experience. I've been as close to lava as I could take it - the heat that is. First time we were on the Big Island, and we walked 45 minutes across the lava field to get to where the active lava flow was occurring.

Before the lower end of the Chain of Craters road was buried, we did the same. Hiked over lava fields in the dark for EVER, just to get to the final stopping point, where a mile or two away, waaaay in the distance, a tiny red line was visible. Then we had to hike all the way back. Kind of a let down.
They claimed it was lava flowing down the hillside. For all we could tell, it may also have been a red flourescent light. Next time I want to get a mite closer.
We also hiked across the lava bed (seemed it was a couple of miles, but maybe that was because it was a lot of climbing up & around lava rocks)--I think it was '05. There was lava flowing and we could walk up pretty close to see the flow, and we could see it fall into the ocean.
But be careful if you're wearing shorts and happen to fall. I had lava shards buried in my legs for some time.
