I have the latest iPod Touch. I'd like to transfer some of the short home videos we have taken with our Cannon Sureshot camera to my Touch so I could hear/watch my kids laughter whenever I feel like it. I tried to email the files to myself but each video was too big of a file for gmail. I thought I'd try to drag it into my iTunes program but it didn't work. From looking online it appears that I have to convert the .avi file to mp4. There are so many free/paid softwares out there. Are there some good free ones? If not, I'd appreciate getting the name of one or two good paid versions. Thanks!

I haven't used this in quite a while, but I used to use an app called DVD to iPod made by Cucusoft. When I used it, it was free. Not sure now. Worked great. Converted pretty much any format to iPod, including directly from a DVD of course.

just putting in my vote for cucusoft.. They have a full line of products that convert video files - and they are more user friendly than the free versions I tried

They also have another product to convert professional DVD movies you own to another format - a DVD Ripper - that might be of use too.

Also ... have you looked at Adobe Elements software - not free, but a very good product to 'author' your home movies into dvd format or to export in other formats once you've taken out the bad parts and added photos, sound, etc. Quite fun. And you get to learn and use Photoshop and Premiere. The Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 & Adobe Premiere Elements 8 Plus package is about $20 more and worth the extra IMO as it includes video training, templates, etc.

AVI files are huge but they are uncompressed which means you can edit for future movies as compressing an already compressed video file makes a poor conversion. You would be wise to save your AVI files like archives of the original clips. It's not as easy to do this now as technology has gone to 'hard disk' movie camcorders from mini DV tapes which were so cheap and easy to keep for archives. Now you have to save the AVI files on disks yourself and they take up a lot of space.
