I have cox internet and my smtp is smtp.west.cox.net. However, I'm spending time at a friends house that has Qwest dsl. I would like to change the smtp in Outlook so that I can send email.

I googled it and found this: pop.tcsn.qwest.net
That didn't work so I changed the pop to smtp which makes more sense to me. That didn't work either.

Any ideas? I"m in Phoenix.

Thanks!
Nancy

It looks like you can just google cox.net webmail or similar and get to a web based email where you can just enter your cox username and password from any browser. When I travel, I just access my own ISP's web-based email. It won't be as full-featured as your Outlook is, but it works.

Changing the 'pop' to 'smtp' won't give you access to your friend's account without their username/ password.

I know this doesn't answer the question of how to send your email on someone else's account, but it will get the job done.

Thanks for your responses!

I've used the Cox web based email and I HATE it! I'd so much rather use Outlook. But if I have to use the webmail I will.

If you are using your personal laptop to connect to your friends wireless network then you should have no need to change anything. Outlook on your laptop would connect via your friends wireless network through the internet to the qwest pop3/smtp server, send the login and password information and then upload/download e-mail from your Qwest account to Outlook.

If you are using your friends PC then you will have to change all their Outlook COX settings to your Qwest settings for pop3 and smtp. That's server name, port setting, your name, your login name, your password....Not a very friendly thing to do to anothers equipment but it is do able although you would not have access to your contacts.

I'm using my own laptop. I can receive email in Outlook, but not send.

pop and imap are for incoming email. smtp is for outgoing email. Your incoming and outgoing mail servers are configured separately in all email programs.

Many ISPs won't accept an smtp connection if you aren't on their network. That's how spammers send out spam, by spoofing their identity and using an "innocent" smtp server. Also, a properly configured smtp server won't allow you to spoof your email either, so you can't just use your friends smtp server with your cox email identity.

But you can read this, if you are still interested in trying it:
