Smart TV's: A Late Convert on the Good, the Bad, and the Lie - by Ben Woods/ Opinion/ TNW/ thenextweb.com

"In AV circles, there’s a diminishing, but still a strong number of smart TV holdouts who just refuse to accept that the devices have anything worthwhile to offer, other than a little more convenience.

To those people’s dismay, it’s now harder than ever to find ones that don’t offer the bells and whistles.

I can sort of see where people who don’t want a smart TV are coming from; non-smart varieties often offer the same (or better) overall image at a much lower price.

However, the world of smart TVs has come a long way since its first stumbling start in 2007 with the introduction of HP’s MediaSmart TV contraption.

It was the beginning of the road to where we are today – huge, curved, internet-connected screens – but it was an ungainly and clunky start..."

When we shopped for a new TV for our 2nd home last year, we noticed we could get a better (faster) TV that was bigger for about $100 less than a Smart TV, then add Amazon TV and Voila! All the functionality for less $$$.

A condo I rented had a smart TV. I was underwhelmed. I have a 42" HD Sony with a Roku and Apple TV. Better picture and easier to use except having to use a couple of remotes instead of one. Oh, and a lot cheaper than a new Smart TV.:D

Cheers

The smart TVs with built in Roku are supposed to be very easy to navigate. I get by with an Xbox on one TV, and a Chromecast on another. I still consider the Chromecast to be one of the cooler devices to come along in quite awhile.

HDHomeRun is Ready to Make Your Android TV a DVR - by Richard Lawler/ AV/ Engadget/ engadget.com

"With the latest update, the NVIDIA Shield can directly record and play back live TV from an attached tuner.

When SiliconDust announced its DIY DVR project a year ago, recording your shows meant building a PC dedicated to the task, or hooking up network storage. Now it's testing out HDHomeRun Record for Android TV, which lets you create an entire DVR with just one of its TV tuner devices and an Android box. Unfortunately, suggested requirements of Android 6.0, Ethernet, and a USB 3.0 connection for external storage mean Amazon's Fire TV and Google's Nexus Player won't work, but NVIDIA Shield Pro owners should be able to try it out immediately, thanks to their 500GB of built-in storage. You can watch the recorded shows directly on the device, or on any platform that runs its HDHomeRun View app..."

when I last shopped, the difference in the same brand of TV between smart and "dumb" was like 100 dollars.
