I bought my fourth timeshare last night off ebay. I pretty much just bought it to rent or trade. It was too good of a deal to pass up, at least it seems so to me, but I'd like to get some feedback from all of you. I picked up an annual 2 bedroom L/O Sheraton Mountain Vista silver season for $202.50. What do you think this week will have as far as trading power? Does SMV have a rental program? Do I have a mental disorder?

I wouldn't imagine it would be great as that's mud season. Thanksgiving falls in that season, I believe. Maybe a reservation that week would be viable as a rental. Personally, I think the mf are too high relative to the number of StarOptions associated with it. But, it might work out for picking up trades during the Starwood preference period in Interval. You don't have much invested so if in a year or two it's a bust, you could just sell it.

Does SMV have a rental program?

Starwood does--I assume they would take any of their properties. Especially, since they don't guarantee anything.

Do I have a mental disorder?

Yes, but so do a lot of us!

The Starwood rental program is not a good deal. Starwood keeps 50% of the rent, and the owner pays any additional costs (like TA commission) out of his half. They also do not guarantee that they will rent your week, so you could end up with nothing.

If this season includes Thanksgiving week, that might be a good renter, but I would rent it myself. However, I don't think this is a big money maker...

A resale at this resort doesn't not qualify for Starwood's internal exchange program, but you could deposit it with II or an independent.

What is your purpose of buying it? If it is trading, it is a DOG. One time, I got a deposit from STARWOOD in the mud season. I can't get anything. We traded for Orlando. They deposited a MUD week for my platinum week because I was late in depositing.

I'm sorry to hear that. Thanksgiving week is my #1 objective as far as reservations go. If I can't rent or use that week, then I'll go for the II option. I wasn't sure how it would trade and since I basically bought it on a whim, there wasn't time to solicit advice on the board. I was thinking worst case senario that it would trade well enough to be worth the $850 year MF. Also I thought I read somewhere that SMV would let you book a gold or silver week for an upgrade price. Anyone know if that is true? I figured for $200 bucks I couldn't go that wrong....reassurance anyone?

Sorry no assurances here. I, personally have a hard time paying that much in mfs for a trade. Don't forget to add on the exchange fees. Have you seen any rentals that would cover the mfs? I would look for a 1-52 SDO week, at least you have spring training (with the Dodgers moving there) and FBR every year (it is alot more money than what you paid for).

Sharktzu,

Soon there will be help for those of us with the timeshare addict affliction...

"Timeshares Anonymous"

We will be a self help organization dedicated to those with a timeshare compulsion who want to be "clean". :D

Oops, got to go check Ebay....

John

Oh how I wish I could make money supporting my addiction . . . I mean hobby! My husband says I've got to quit letting friends and family use our weeks by just paying our mf (no, not exchanges, RCI cops).

I keep thinking that someday the developers will find a way to prevent fire sales on ebay and the like, much like the outrageously high transfer fee of Mayan Palaces. Then all of us up to our eyeballs in ts will really have a portfolio. (Isn't denial one of the symptoms?)

The problem is, John, we'll be sitting around our "Timeshares Anonymous" meeting, talking about our addictions, and someone will say, "I heard of this timeshare HOA that is giving away free weeks and couldn't resist getting one," and then everyone else will run off and get a week there, too!

I have a TON of timeshares right now. I need to get my act together and get more of them rented out or sold.

I also own too many. I have stopped watching ebay. The prices are great, but when you have to pay mf for 8 plus timeshares a year - for me I need to stop.

Want more - hate the mf bills.
