Okay ... selling a "new in the box" appliance (not a required to live thing) on Craigslist. I am moving out in the next 6 months. And yes, I could USE this if I wanted in my new home (which I am in possession of with a install cost of another $750-1000).

Lowes price is $1199. My asking price is $725. First offer was $525.

Opinions?

Added: This is a winter season item. And heavy.

There are a lot of buy, sell, trade local groups on Facebook. I would try to find one and try it there.

My experience with selling on Craiglist is you need to sell for dirt cheap, about half of the new item. If you are comfortable waiting and talking to lots of people, you can probably get more. Whenever I sell stuff, I am in a hurry to get rid of it.

I would agree. New in box only gives maybe a 10-20% premium over what it would sell for used. We recently moved and sold a lot of things either through Craigslist or through Facebook groups. We sold a lot of stuff and things that we didn't think would sell, sold fast and others that we expected to go quickly, we still have. A couple things we were able to sell for almost what we bought them for, but most things were sold for pennies on the dollar.

All that said, if you don't need to sell it fast, start the price high because you can continue to decrease until it finally sells. If you want to sell it fast, then you are better to price it dirt cheap. If you get a lot of offers, you know you are priced too low. We have always selling for what we have listed it for. But we have often seen people have stuff listed low with lots of interest and then it shows up again a week later at a higher price.

My experience with Craigslist is that at least half of the people who respond to an ad have no real intention of buying the item (or even picking it up if it's offered for free). Thus, I always am VERY specific in the ad about things. And I never negotiate price except IN PERSON. They have to show up and have the cash in hand before we haggle. Otherwise, you negotiate with someone and think it's all set and then they're a no-show or they show up late with less money than you agreed on.

You might be better off with eBay local. Those people still want deals but they're not quite as flaky as Craigslist.

I would agree about that. So many people never show up. I don't understand why they would waste their time browsing the ads and responding if they have no intention of ever buying it. Someone was supposed to show up and buy a bed and frame on Friday. It is now Sunday and they haven't responded to a Facebook message my wife sent them. They important thing is, first come first serve. Never tell anyone you have the item sold to someone else. The only time we did do this was when we were selling a bunch of camping gear. We actually delivered it and all was well. We did know that with the amount of interest the listing garnered, we wouldn't have a problem getting other offers. We probably wouldn't do this again though.

I drove quite a way to buy a media stand, the woman showed us every thing else, then finally went to show us the media stand and it wasn't there. She claimed to not know where it was. We ended up going out for an expensive dinner on the way home at a restaurant we normally didn't go to because it was too far.

VegasBella ....

I agree with the never barter online or over the phone for a specific item ... in person is my goal. If they show up, they are at least a buyer verses a lookie-louie. And low brow offers, I don;t respond on the first offer ... when they follow up, I then reply (and most of the time with NO COUNTER offer .. just restate the price).

I have pictures and the item is searchable online to major box stores. And these items are either in the unopen box or in original packing material.

Minutes ago, last updated offer is "Willing to barter" for the difference in my asking price.

Got to love Craigslist.

It does help if you can provide links to where people can find the same or very similar product on the web. We have even been able to find old write up descriptions from the manufacturer of several items we have sold. Helps to include those in the ad. The more people know about it, the better. Just like selling a timeshare, the more details you can provide, the better your chances.

If you can get half the price as they sell for at Lowes, that is pretty good. $525 is not a bad offer. It just depends how much of a hassle you want to go throug try to get more money. The $525 might not have been an honest offer and the person was just trying to see if you would take the offer. If they show up, they will probably have some excuse and offer even less.

We always get a lot of low-ball offers. Just like in the timeshare rental world. What I always find interesting with Facebook groups, people will see dozens of people responding to a listing and make a low ball offer. We already have full price offers, so why would we take your low-ball?

We had a stereo receiver with speakers listed. They were real old, but still had digital inputs but no HDMI. Each time my wife would bump the listing and lower the price, the same guy would come back and offer $40. We decided in the end to just keep it and put it in our bedroom.

Have sold plenty on CL over the years from small stuff to appliances and furniture. Have also bought things from CL sellers. It's an interesting game.

The low ball offers are often coming from flippers that are going to turn around and sell it for close to your asking price. New in box for 60% of retail is a reasonable asking price, even on CL. Hold the line. Ignore the low-ball prices. CL buyers have a mindset that everyone who sells is willing to take 25% - 50% of the asking price. Even when the ad says "firm" (people don't read). Good that you include the retail cross reference in the ad.

Would take the ad down and leave it down for at least 3-5 days if you can spare the time lag. Then re-write the ad at a higher asking price. Factor in accepting about 25% less in the final offer. Everyone "feels" like they win. There is homeowner or a investment property owner out there that is not a flipper that has already done the retail price comparisons and will recognize the price savings. If you are willing to wait it out, renew your ad every 3 days and ride out all of the stupid low ball offers.

Thanks, Bellawyn.

I have not sold much on Craigslist ... but I do know value and jerks or flippers .... people who are buying for themselves ... they have shopped the stores and will invest the time to look at it.

Good advice.
