Brand new to TUG. I bought a DVC 15 years ago (resale) and it has been great. Just retired and looking at timeshares. I have spent the last week reading as much as I can on this site, TONS of information to absorb. I am leaning towards Wyndham at this point, thinking about picking up some points to check it out (150,000 or so).
I figure I can always add later. When I purchased DVC I went with the lowest MF's which has been great. Trying to do the same, trying to figure out the difference between Club access and a specific location. Any advice is appreciated.
1) Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where?
Not really, likely to be Florida beaches (I am in Georgia) but can see the mountains as well though not as frequently.
2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
Probably do not care about the home resort but I think my preference is to not trade outside of the organization using RCI just because of the fees.
3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
Florida beaches, smoky mountains, possibly a few times into Virginia or even the northeast
4) How many people do you usually travel with - total, including yourself?
2
5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
Yes
6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
I can, but often prefer closer to 3-6 months.
7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
I can but at present my thoughts are that I will frequently do a Sunday - Thursday to get better rates. This is what I have tended to do with Disney
8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
3 is fine, of course 4 is better.
9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
Not really an issue, probably 10k - 30k but my preference is to get a used timeshare. From what I have seen these can be purchased for very little. I am very aware of the ongoing MF so I would like to get one with lower fees to start.
10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
Less and issue of an absolute amount and whether it saves me money in the long run as opposed to booking hotels throughout the year. Certainly $1k - $3k is not a big deal. This is where I am thinking about tip toeing in and seeing if a smaller amount of points is useful.
11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
Can be if necessary. Certainly have done so when going to Disney.
12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?
Yes, that is why getting in for a lower up front cost and a smaller foot print is where I am thinking to start.
