SEDONA OR SANTA FE ?
Could anyone tell me if it is possible to take a escorted trip to Monument valley from either of the above.
I am a sunterra club member & I think that these two towns are the nearest
options. Coming from the Uk I do not think I am able to take hire cars from one state to another so it is not possible to drive .
Many thanks

I would think Sedona would be a better base and I know of no restriction on taking rental cars between states based on coming from the UK.

You might get an answer from this group:

The area is on Navajo land. It seems to me that when I was in Sedona many years ago that there was a tour offered from there. Contact the resorts. They would know.

Sedona is definitely the more convenient place to stay for a visit to Monument Valley. Since you will have a car you might look into making your own arrangments and spending a night in Monument Valley. As I understand it, Goulding's is the only place to stay actually in Monument Valley itself and tours of the Valley are done only by the Navajos. You can set up a reservation for Gouldings and a tour of Monument Valley online at http://www.gouldings.com/english/index.htm

Have a good trip!

ditto on staying overnite. Its got to be 4 hours or so each way from sedona. There is a hampton inn at kenyta (sp) just outside the valley. As of 5 years ago, Admittance to the valley is cheap, just a few dollars. Then they want you to ride their jitneys thru the valley at about 25 dollars each person. Since we had a rental car we drove it ourselves. The speed limit is 15 MPH in the valley but I doubt you can average more than 10 mph because of the ruts in the road. Thats how they get you to ride the jitney.

Other Options in lieu of Monument Valley

Since Monument Valley is a bit away from both Sedona and Santa Fe, you may want to consider other more local attractions at either location. Both Santa Fe and Sedona offer a myriad selection of both beautiful natural sites and indian ruins.

The grand canyon is an easy drive from Sedona along with lots of interesting native Indian sites in the area. Some of the Indian mesas do allow private cars, but in many cases you are better off taking an escorted tour. Most of the T/S places offer this option. Santa Fe also offers great hikes, scenery and interesting tales on the high road to Taos, again with lots of interesting natural sites and Indian sites in the surrounding area.

Wrt to driving. At least for US Citizens there are very few restrictions on driving a rental car between states. Please check your local agency or just call Hertz to find out more.

Good Luck!

I believe this traveler is coming all the way from across the big pond, so Monument Valley will seem pretty close. I was advised to travel there from Sedona, and I know tour groups which include it along with Sedona, the Grand Canyon, and bits of Utah - when I travel so far, I usually tack a few days to either end of my T/S week to accomdate the nearby sites. But I do agree that crossing state lines should not be a problem, just as it's not a problem for travel with rental cars through countries in EU.
