We just left our refrigerator closed during a power outage that lasted about 8 hours.

TBH, I just use a generator that I turn on when the power goes out. It's not even fancy, just a big portable unit from Amazon and a manual switch outside on the pole to swap input.

I keep extra ice in the freezer that can be moved to the refrigerator. About 1.5-2 gal of ice = 24 hours. I fill extra plastic milk/juice/applesauce/mayo/pop bottles with water and keep the freezer full. It's easy to discard and refill as needed. I put them in the back or corners where 'regular' food tends to get lost. If the power goes out, there is enough ice to move into the refrigerator and enough to turn the freezer into a large ice chest.
