Lucky enough to get to Sanibel in November and we love seafood. Would like some tips on the best restaurants in the 20 mile radius of Sanibel. Thanks in advance :)

I can't help you with any Sanibel/Captiva places to eat, but there are plenty of great places near Ft. Myers Beach. On San Carlos, which is the main drag to FMB, is "Pincher's Crab house"...it's where the old Johnny Leverocks was before you get to the FMB bridge. It's a local place that started up the street (and still is there) but now has 2 locations in Ft. Myers/N. Ft. Myers. Just over the bridge and too the right and and then the right again is "Snug Harbor". Also before the FMB bridge is "The FishMonger" on the right hand side as you head to FMB. It's not much to look at but the food is very good. To get to all of these, you would come off of Sanibel and to to San Carlos Blvd/St and turn right. If you care to go all the way into Ft. Myers there is "The Shrimp Shack" on Colonial in the Royal Palm Square shopping Mall just before the bridge to Cape Coral and the original Shrimp Shack on Metro just north of Daniels Pkway. I have eaten at all of these places and recommend them. Our daughter and her BF have eaten at several other places but like these the best. They are NOT fond of The PrawnBroker, which advertises heavily. The seafood here is very good.

Cathy,
Nov. is a great time to go. We will be there the last 3 weeks in Nov.

There are a lot of good restaurants on Sanibel. I like the Timbers. Their casual restaurant next door, The Sanibel Grille has a great Crunchy Grouper. My husband likes their Grouper Reuben.

The Greenflash on Captiva is good. They have a good crunchy grouper also. They also have a special each day. One is pasta and one is seafood.

I have always loved the Key Lime Bistro on Captiva for seafood. Last time we ate there it was really bad. I'm hoping it was a onetime thing.

Matzaluna is great. I don't remember what kind of seafood they have though.

Dr. Ford's Rum Bar and Grille is good.

Lazy Flamingo and also Grandma Dot's is good.

For seafood there is the Seafood Factory. It is probably the only restaurant on Sanibel I haven't eaten at but I've heard a lot of people say they like it.

Best meal I have ever had on Sanibel I fixed myself. Go to Viller's Fish Market on Ft. Myers Beach and buy shrimp fresh off the boat. Their medium size is enormous. I bought some dipping oil at Williams-Sonoma at the Bell Tower Shoppes on Ft. Myers and a loaf of bread at the Cheese Nook at Periwinkle Place on Sanibel. Fix a salad and you're ready to go!!!

CathyB, There are many good restaurants on Sanibel. i would not cross that bridge to go out for dinner. Traffic and a $6 toll to me aren't worth it. if you are making a trip for other reasons, by all means try restaurants off the island, otherwise, stay put. As far as Key Lime Bistro, a 3 ounce piece of mahi, a melon ball scoop of yellow rice, and a melon ball scoop of beets, early bird special $18. not worth it to me.

We usually eat lunch at Key Lime. They are around $10 average. Also there is a 2 for 1 in the entertainment book for lunch or dinner.

I also like the Timbers and the Green Flash. I like McT's too.

Isn't the most famous fish dinner on Captiva the Grouper in a Bag at the Bubble Room?

Island Cow

We drove over to Sanibel on Tuesday to eat at our favorite, the Island Cow. Always good food at reasonable prices. I think our tab for three was $26 before tip. I wish DH and I had shared, as we both brought home more than half our food. They had eight fresh fish varieties to choose from, along with many non-fish dishes.

I hadn't seen the island since the hurricane, so I wanted to check out the damage while we were in the area. It was sad to see the difference, but it looked good if you didn't know how it looked before. I still saw a few roofs with unrepaired damage.

I was also surprised by the construction on the causeway, which caused us a bit of delay.

If you like thrift stores (our favorite kind of shopping) be sure to check out Noahs Ark in one of the churches there. We always find a couple of treasures. My husband also found a nice carved wooden frame at the Goodwill store.
