Okay Tuggers, what's the secret to renting a car at SFO airport for a weekend? I'm officiating my niece's wedding at the end of June, and am trying to find an affordable mid-size rental car for the weekend of June 26th. Best I can find is a whopping $176.25, which seems like a lof of money for only two days.

Anyone have a better plan?

Dave

Dave - you don't even want a car in SF. It's like driving in Manhattan and parking is $30+ a night.. Public transportation is cheap and easy - just say no!

Denise, I completely agree, but we're not staying in SF. The wedding is in Berkeley, the bride and groom live in Napa, and the bride's family lives in Fairfield. The wedding is Saturday evening, and our return flight back up to Seattle isn't till Sunday night. We expect to be doing a fair amount of driving around that weekend. With so much happening, I figure we're going to need a car.

Tony, can you send your email again? I didn't get it.

Dave

Did you try Priceline? I've seen great deals for car rentals. As long as you don't care what company it is, it's worth a try. Look at biddingfortravel.com , and you can get an idea about what bids are being accepted.

My son, who lives in SF, has said that there are huge airport fees. If so, you might want to take Bart into the city and then use a city based rental outlet. I have used Priceline for Oakland Airport and gotten cars for about $20 to $25 per day. I agree on trying Priceline. Are you staying in San Francisco or across the bay in Berkeley?

Hi Dave,
We just rented a car in S.F. last weekend, through Dollar. I had originally reserved one their "Special City Rates", as they were the best rates around at the time (1 month prior). Then, at 7 days before our trip, the prices dropped substantially! We had a compact for $60 total, Fri-Sun.
Good luck!

Thanks, everyone for the ideas. I dug through more websites, surfed a bit, and lo and behold - I found a deal I can live with:

Reserved a mid-size from National through Costco.com for that weekend for $26.99 a day. Out the door for the weekend it was only $82. I can certainly live with that, and pick-up/drop-off is right at the Airport. Saved nearly a hundred dollars off the best published deal I'd seen prior.

I'm a happy camper!
