Went to watch a DVD Friday night and had the problems described below. I thought, "Well it has been a couple of years, the player just went belly up." Threw it out (still was able to retrieve it), ordered a replacement, and now I found that this is a world wide problem. If you have a Samsung Blu Ray player, be aware.

Other users reported other problems, such as the device making weird noises as it's constantly trying to read a disk even if the disk slot is empty ... other users are reporting that players are not responding to commands or button presses.

Thanks Roger, happened to me about a month ago.

Don't think I'll replace it.

We saw the news blurb yesterday and have a Samsung Blu-ray unit. Haven't tried it yet ... maybe next week ...

Just tossed ours, but it was totally dead (no lights). Bought it for $50 bucks as a refurb on Woot years ago, so I wasn't torn up. Replaced it with a $40 Phillips refurb that I also bought on Woot for the bedroom that I never hooked up.

Doesn't everybody stream nowadays?
Kids will ask, "What are the little round silver things, anyway?"

I have had the ability to stream for a little over a year. So I do stream, but not everything is available to stream. Also, lots of rural, and not so rural America, still doesn't get high speed internet. I had some millennial visitors to my house and yes one of them made fun of my DVD/CD collection. Mark Ruffalo(actor) was on Kimmel last week and he had to go to a local business to do his Kimmel interview because he only has dial up at his house. His kids had to do their homework via cellular data usage/hotspot or they go to the business to use the WIFI.

As a follow up to what Gina says, I can stream and often this is my current preference. But not everything is available through streaming. For example, my wife and like the Vera mystery series. Google Play and Acorn only have up to season 7. I am currently watching season 9 on DVD. I could join Britbox, but for this one item, it is cheaper to just get the DVD's from Britain. I might note that there is a huge price difference ordering DVD's from Amazon if you order from their British site as opposed to ordering the exact same thing from their American site. You do have to have a DVD player that will play all regions, which mine will.

We also occassionally like to go back and rewatch things that we have on DVD's. Old episodes of Death in Paradise for example. I could pay for them with Google Play but why do that when I already have the DVD's?
