We have a dispute over a Rummikub rule. You need 30 points to lay down. One friend says you can't lay down on existing tiles of other players until your next turn after laying down your 30. The rules seem ambigious on this point. What say the experts.

In our house/my family (and I double-checked with the real pros (the kids)), once we lay down, we can play on the existing tiles of the other players that same turn. I'm guessing you already know this, and it's not what you are asking, you have to lay down 30 points from your own tiles - playing on the tiles of other players doesn't count in the initial 30.

This is the way I play but we are playing with another person who has been playing with the different rule for an extended time. I don't want to upset them by insisting on playing by what I consider the correct way. If we all understand the 'house rules' I guess it isn't worth making an issue out of it.

We play by the same rules - the initial 30 points must come from your own tiles

+1 here as well 30 from your own tiles

I was taught 30 points or more down but can’t touch existing until next turn

We just played this afternoon. You have to lay down 30 points to start. Then you can add to others in the game. You cannot come out with a joker.

And you can add to other tiles, after the initial 30, in the same turn

We play every Sunday at the old folks home. 30 points from your hand to get in, continue to play on other tiles on the board once you are in. We had been taught that a tile to replace a “joker” on the board had to come from your hand. A gal who also plays with family encouraged us to read the directions for ourselves and we agreed that it appeared joker replacements can also come from tiles on the board.

Is that in the written directions about not opening with a joker? We open with jokers all the time.

I agree with your version. My issue was that the person wanted to wait until the next turn after you laid down your initial 30 points.

Never open with a joker and cannot take a number off the board to replace joker, has to be in your hand first.
That’s how we play.
