Royal Sands Cancun Safety

With more and more bad news coming out of Cancun in the hotel zone, like recent accosting of three school kids on spring break right on the beach, has anyone familiar with the Royal Sands found there to be problems there. We are due to go there April 6 - 27. We are "very" elderly, like one member of our group 91...and for the first time in thirty years of going to the Royals are a little fearful. My sister has said she will not go down to the beach. I live on the beach there when I am there!

We will be at the Royal Sands from 4/6-4/20. We are not at all concerned about the safety of the resort. We too are senior citizens. FYI how come only Fox News has this report??

They aren't. Here is the same story in Yahoo News, a media outlet on the other end of the political spectrum. It also looks like the story may have been reported on WFLA, an NBC affiliate in Tampa.

I was able to read the Yahoo article, but not Fox News. Did either article specifically say they were on the beach? To me it sounded like they were somewhere other than their hotel room, but its not clear where.

When in Mexico don't drink excessively, don't show off cash, and don't wear expensive jewelry. You'll be fine.

I originally read the Yahoo news article but it basically quotes Fox News so I went to the source. I was able to read the article on Fox News when I posted the link but it's now behind a paywall. The article stated that the girls were on the beach when this happened. Everything I've read is based on what the father of one of the girls is saying so no firsthand account yet.

Hmmm. I'm skeptical. First off, what they described are the military/police that patrol the beaches in Mexico. Very common to see them. Second, they say they paid them $900. Do college girls normally carry $300 each on the beach? Is it possible that they were scamming their parents just so they could pocket the $900 (which I'm sure came from their parents in the first place)?

"Fox News reports the girls paid over $900 to the robbers and reported that other spring breakers have shared similar experiences." Who are the "others" that have reported similar experiences?

Too many open questions, and frankly, if this report originally came from FoxNews, they have a tendency of sensationalizing anything non-"'Merican"

One of the articles indicated that they allowed one of them to go back to the room to get the $900. So they didn't have it all with them on the beach. That aside, I kinda agree with you, something doesn't quite add up.

We just got back from 9 days at EL CID. We went to Cancun twice during our stay for excursions. Personally, I did NOT FEEL SAFE, nor did my husband. Our other family members solve this issue by not leaving the EL CID property. We are not travelers, who enjoy sitting within the confines of a resort so for us, Mexico is a hard no for the time being. Everybody will have different views, and will have to make their travel decisions based on what they are looking for in a vacation. Personally we like to explore, so Cancun and probably most of Mexico is not a safe place for us to vacation. This is a personal observation and I know thousands of people love El CID and Mexico in general, these comments are in no way disparaging what they enjoy. As I say.” it’s just not our cup of tea.”

We were at the Royal Sands in February and felt perfectly safe. The Mexican police ride up and down the beach. But we have a quiet lifestyle and only leave the resort a three times. We visit the Soriana in the Mall after check in for staples, food, liquor and mixers. We take the bus to Chedrauri the next morning for the remainder of the food. Their freshly made ceviche bar is better than any restaurant we have ever gone to. When we go out to dinner we talk across the street to El Fish Fritanga or one of the other restaurants near by. We don't go out at night and don't get visibly drunk. Never had a safety problem.

We stayed at the Royal Sands years ago, maybe 17 years ago, and there were no Mexican police patrolling up/down the beach that we ever saw. Times have changed
