RIP Marty Balin (co-founder of Jefferson Airplane/Starship)

Marty Balin, a co-founder of the 60's rock band Jefferson Airplane, reborn as Jefferson Starship, has died. Another co-founder, Paul Kantner, died in 2016. Grace Slick, who joined the band in 1966, is still with us at age 78.

Balin and Starship were probably best known for their '70-80's soft-rock hits: "With Your Love," "Miracles," "Count on Me" and "We Built This City." Earlier, Jefferson Airplane with Grace Slick had two top 10 hits - "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit."

Takes me way, way back. Grace Slick, husband Jerry, and brother-in-law Darby Slick were in The Great Society, a definite garage band of its time. Anybody who listens to them can hear the roots of what became Jefferson Airplane. RIP Marty.

Jefferson Starship was one of our favorites on our Moody Blues cruise last year! We will see them again on different music cruise in March. They put on great performances! Sad to read of Balin's death. He was not performing when we saw them.

In 2016, Balin had heart surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, who he later sued for botching his aftercare which resulted in removal in half his tongue and left him unable to sing. Apparently, the case is still pending. A sad ending to a great musical career. BTW, Mount Sinai is also where Glen Fry died.
