Fairly new Marriott owner and have a question about how Marriott calculates reward points for timeshare usage.

I am an owner at Harbour Point in HHI and will use my fixed week in July. I also just booked a Getaway via II for Ocean Pointe in December. From browsing the forum I understand I should get some level of Marriott Reward points for the stay- but how are those points calculated and how do they apply to status (ie. nights, etc.)

No, you won't get points for timeshare usage - unless you incur charges while staying there. If you do, you should earn points the same way you do when staying in a Marriott hotel: based on how much you spend.

You might be referring to the credit you get for nights stayed in the timeshare. Those nights count towards earning elite status with Marriott Rewards. It takes 25 nights in a year (or having a Marriott credit card) for Silver status, 50 nights for Gold status and 75 nights for Platinum status.

Did they just change the qualification for Silver? I thought it was 10 nights.

One additional clarification on earning MR points at a timeshare or hotel: You only get points for Marriott "owned" services. So the bar/restaurant charges will likely get you points, but if the spa is run by an outside company then your massage won't earn points. Similarly with parking charges - they are often handled by an outside company and no points are granted.

would you really not get points for a getaway? Isn't it like renting a hotel 10pts/dollar spent if you use your marriott credit card?

I assume since the Getaway is through II, you would not receive Marriott points for the cost of it.

That's correct. No points for buying a Getaway from II. If you use a Marriott credit card for the purchase, you would get the same points as for other non-Marriott purchases.

If you book a stay at a Marriott hotel through a 3rd party (like Priceline) you don't receive points on the charges for the room. Since you pay Priceline it's not billed directly by Marriott. These nights don't count towards your elite credit nights. Again, you will receive points for charges to the room during your stay there.

To receive 10 points per dollar for a Marrriot hotel stay you have to pay the Marriott hotel directly for your nightly charges.

Anyone know if you will get Elite Nights credit for a Get-Away booked with II?

Elite Night Credit Getaways

I have received credits for both Getaways and Accomodation Certifcate usage. Make sure the representative inputs your reward number when you check in

Yes, thanks to now getting elite nights credits for II getaways, I'll make MarriottRewards Platinum this year for the first time ever.

I just made Platinum. Just stayed in Orlando for 5 nights to go to a reunion and was upgraded on arrival to a magnificent King Executive Suite! I did not even ask - it was automatic! The room was so huge we were blown away! We also were offered options - either bonus points or bottled water - I took the points, of course.

Congratulations on reaching platinum!

Aaah..a goal we are trying to achieve in 2010. Between AC's, getaways, regular home stays, exchanges, gift of time offers and Marriott credit card nights, we hope to make platinum. If not, it sure is fun calculating and planning, but most of all enjoying the wonderful vacations. Thank you again Tuggers.

Where did you stay in Orlando?

We traded into Frenchman's Cove and received 150 Points + 50% Elite Bonus for staying there. Those points don't have anything to do with purchases. We only spent $17 at the resort.

If you spent $17, then it was likely around $15 + tax. Marriott gives you 10 points per dollar so that's the 150 points. (They don't give points on the tax.) If you're silver, gold or platinum elite you'll always get an elite bonus on the points (50% for platinum).

If you exchange into a Marriott property and don't spend anything you won't get any points credited to your account. (Unless you are platinum and take the welcome amenity of 500 points.)

Thanks. I feel so stupid.:( They did give us a card that said we'd get 500 points for being platinum, but it's never shown up. We were there May 15-22.
